About me and my therapy practice

I am a relationally-focused integrative therapist, with eight years clinical experience. I hold an MSc in Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy, Level 6 Certificate in Clinical Supervision, Level 3 Award in Education and Training, and am an accredited BACP member.

I practice an integrative psychotherapy with heavy focus on the therapeutic relationship as the central playground wherein ingrained relational patterns can be noticed, explored and challenged.

Since 2019, I have facilitated training & workshops to agencies and universities on Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Schema Therapy.

I also have three-years' experience facilitating fortnightly skills practice sessions for therapy students in placement at a local agency across a wide range of topics.

I can offer online introductory workshops on:

  • Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Schema Therapy
  • Attachment Theory in Psychotherapy
  • Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Person Centred Therapy
I can also offer bespoke training workshops (within integrative, relational psychotherapy) tailored to specific audiences and experience levels (e.g. Attachment theory for CBT therapists).

Feel free to get in touch to discuss the details of your circumstances and/or organisation.

Practice description

I believe that an individual's sense of self, (in)security in the world, and (dis)comfort in one's own skin is largely developed in critical relationships in formative years of childhood and adolescence.

Therefore, a therapeutic relationship is therapeutic insofar as it provides new relational experiences that challenges and transforms these old relational patterns and world-views.

My core training is an MSc in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy, which integrated Person-Centred, Attachment, and Cognitive-Behavioural approaches. I have extra training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy. My biases are towards relational, attachment and schema-focused lenses.

About me and my therapy practice

As in therapy, the foundation for fruitful supervision is a secure, attuned, trustworthy relationship in which you feel safe to talk about your practice, free to explore, and open to feedback, challenge and new perspectives.

I offer you a space to 'feel felt' in supervision, as well as encourage your critical thinking, as you process your client work. I will hold in mind your career path as a whole, by encouraging us to get to know your strengths and weaknesses, and pitching-up in your 'zone of proximal development'.

Each therapist is unique and on their particular stage of their career path. Therefore I am open to finding collaborative ways of working together which fit your needs, so long as they fit within the broad purposes of supervision, which I see as being:

  • to support you in your clinical practice
  • to reflect on the processes of your clients, and yourself in relationship with your clients
  • to maintain and grow your competence, skills, knowledge and confidence
  • to foster your unique professional development
  • to monitor ethical practice (for the welfare of yourself, your clients, the general public, and the profession).

The supervision I offer utilises the Integrative Developmental Model (IDM; Stoltenberg and McNeill, 2010) and the Seven-Eyed Model (Hawkins and Shohet, 2012).

About me and my therapy practice

Welcome to my private practice. I'm Luke, an Integrative Psychotherapist, Supervisor and Educator, with eight years clinical experience. My collaborative style is tailored to fit your issues, desires, needs and goals.

I believe that, for each us, our sense of self, (in)security in the world, and (dis)comfort in our own skin is largely developed in critical relationships in formative years of childhood and adolescence, and then developed throughout life.

Therefore, a relationship – our relationship – is therapeutic insofar as it facilitates insights and provides you with new relational experiences that challenges old relational patterns and world-views. This is what I aim to offer.

I will help you explore your experiences in order for us to build a shared understanding of the ways in which you suffer, the meaning of this suffering, the ways in which you would like things to be different and a road-map for how to move from one to the other.

Building this shared road-map is an ongoing part of our work together, and naturally evolves over time as you gain more insight.

I offer a collaboration, viewing us as equal partners in a shared project. In my role, I aim both to understand and empathise with you, and also to be an active partner, offering you guidance, skills and tools, where appropriate.

I place heavy focus on our relationship as the central playground wherein ingrained relational patterns can be noticed, explored and challenged.

Practice description

I believe that our relationship, between you and me, is the most important factor in you getting what you want from therapy.

From birth, and throughout life, we form beliefs and expectations from our experiences of being in relationship with others.

These internal models become the starting blueprint for future relationships, and therefore, impact all our interactions, interpretations, predictions, expectations, wants, feelings, thoughts and reactions.

They include beliefs and rules about how the world, and the people in it, work, and include beliefs about ourselves: our competence, our social 'rank' and our sense of worth.

And yet we take these models for granted as reality. So much so that we are not aware of them — like the proverbial fish, who, so immersed by water, couldn't comprehend what water was.

Our relational models contain strategies for protecting ourselves from relational pain (say, from being judged, misunderstood, neglected, bullied, dominated, belittled, rejected, abandoned, and being in and around arguments and conflict).

And the ongoing use of and consequences of these protective strategies usually become the reasons that we come to therapy.

Our tasks in therapy, then, are to make sense of your suffering and self-protective strategies, process the pain from which they attempt to protect you, and to create new experiences of being in relationship (in our relationship) in order to transform our outdated models.

Trauma Informed

You don't necessarily know if you have unprocessed trauma. Being trauma-informed means I'm aware of the warning signs and risks surrounding trauma, and bare this in mind when creating a safe supportive environment, ensuring you have grounding tools, so we can work to stay in your 'window of tolerance' (Siegel, 1999) when challenging defences and processing old wounds.

My first session

It's hard to find the right therapist for you, or even to know if therapy is right for you.

Contact me asking to book a free 30-minute Zoom chat. There, you can let me know a bit about your situation, ask me any questions, and see if we're the right match.

There's no pressure to move forward at the end of this call. Take your time and get back to me if you'd like to work together.

And if I don't feel I'm the right match for you I'll do my best to refer you to appropriate help.

If you would like to try a session, we can explore your situation in more depth, and start the project of building a shared map about your issues, the way you'd like things to be different, and what might help you move from the former to the latter.

Who is therapy for?

Psychotherapy helps with psychological and/or relational issues. These concerns usually revolve around:

  • Emotions, feelings, moods (e.g. anxiety, depression)
  • Thoughts (e.g. worry, self-criticism)
  • Motivation (e.g. lethargy, compulsions)
  • Behaviour (e.g. avoidance, habits)
  • Relationships (e.g. communication, conflict, boundaries, sex/romance, commitment)
  • Internal conflict involving all of the above

In general, these issues and suffering are centred around self-preservation strategies such as:

  • Stress, anxiety, panic, vigilance, trauma (threat reactions)
  • Depression, lethargy, lack of joy and drive (powerlessness reactions)
  • Anger, rage, resentment, hate, vengeance (injustice reactions)
  • Avoidance, such as withdrawal, procrastination, perfectionism, alcoholism and other drug use
  • People-pleasing, such as hiding preferences and feelings, lacking assertiveness, doing things you don't want to do
  • Low self-esteem, shame, guilt, self-criticism
  • Control strategies such as obsessions, compulsions
  • Cognitive defences such as worrying, catastrophising
  • Distraction, self-soothing and self-medicating leading to self-defeating habits

Or maybe something's just 'not right', but otherwise can't put your finger on what. This is a completely normal starting point for therapy.
