About me and my therapy practice
I am a humanistic counsellor, working with individuals and couples who experience various psychological difficulties that arise in their effort to deal with problems they encounter in living. My primary concern in therapy is to establish a confidential conversational space in which my clients feel safe to talk about their concerns as openly as they can. I do not diagnose, appraise or judge. I am interested in listening to how people experience themselves, their relationships and the world in which they live, and I work in close collaboration with my clients to help them to find new ways of understanding and coping with difficult feelings, thoughts or situations. I believe that trust and dialogue are central to creating the possibility for people to be respected, heard and understood. From both my professional and personal experience I learned that forming such a relationship with the therapist can be helpful in achieving greater clarity about our experiences, values and what we are prepared to do in order to live a more meaningful or satisfying life. With my former academic interest in social anthropology and my experience of living in different cultures, I enjoy working with people from diverse cultural background.
Practice description
My task is to encourage the person to express the tension, dissatisfaction or concern they find difficult to live with, helping them in the process to clarify and name the problem. In an atmosphere of respect, warmth and willingness to understand the client's personal experience, I work to create an opportunity to explore and understand the troubling emotional, behavioural or relational problem with the aim of introducing certain changes that offer a greater sense of wellbeing for the client.
I work with individuals and couples.
I offer online therapy (via Zoom) as well as walking and talking sessions.
My first session
The first session is an opportunity for clients and me to get to know each other and see whether we can work together.
My main focus, in this initial conversation, is on listening to the clients' story of the presenting problem and asking questions that can lead us to achieve a good enough description of the situation which they are struggling with. I also pay attention to the aspects of the wider context of the individual's or couple's lives which may have played a role in the development of the problem, but which may also be useful in finding new ways of coping with the difficulty.
Towards the end of the first session, the client(s) and I usually reach an agreement about how we can work together with the aim to solve the problem so that they can lead a more comfortable, satisfying or meaningful life.
I offer online or phone sessions, and I do not charge for the initial session.
