About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I’m Gill. I offer counselling and EMDR therapy to adults facing a wide range of issues.
I am passionate about supporting people to live life to the full and believe therapy can help to reach that goal. My approach is integrated, which means I use a combination of humanistic, psychodynamic and CBT techniques. I also offer EMDR and this is particularly effective if you have experienced trauma or distressing events. Counselling is often described as going on a journey to explore and understand yourself at a deeper level. It may be that you are struggling with relationship issues or low self-esteem. You may be suffering from anxiety or depression, or maybe you lack confidence and feel this is holding you back in life. You may have been through loss, bereavements or other traumatic events that continue to affect you in a negative way. I offer a warm, confidential, non-judgemental setting giving you the time and space you need to ensure you feel safe enough to explore what is on your mind.
I have many years' experience working in mental health units with individuals who have enduring mental health issues. As a counsellor I have worked with staff in an NHS hospital, for a charity providing counselling to clients in inner London, and with children and teenagers in various settings. As well as my private practice, I currently work for a charity offering counselling to children, teenagers and adults who have been sexually abused.
My qualifications include: Advanced Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling L4. Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling.
Diploma in Working with Children & Adolescents.
EMDR (Eye Movement desensitisations & reprocessing) levels 1,2,3 &4.
Practice description
EMDR has been proven to be highly effective for processing traumas in life. Our mind can often heal itself naturally, particularly when we are asleep during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. EMDR uses this natural process to heal a wide range of issues. If you have had a disturbing experience which continues to cause you distress and affects your quality of life, EMDR can help you to process and overcome those traumatic experiences.The psychodynamic practice includes looking for patterns or themes that run through-out our lives and to make sense of the impact they have on us. The humanistic approach is the foundation of my practice. Offering a warm accepting, non-judgemental space. There is an understanding that the working relationship between the client and counsellor is most important for therapy to be effective. Also, a belief that individuals have sufficient recourses to deal effectively with life and move towards growth and wholeness.
I use these models and elements of CBT woven together in an integrated manner and this enables me to tailor my approach to fit your individual needs.
My first session
It is wise to find a counsellor that is the right one for you and so your initial phone consultation of 10-15 minutes with me is free of charge. This will give you an opportunity to see if you feel comfortable about working together. Our first session will be an assessment session. This is a time for me to get to know more about you, your history and what you are finding difficult right now. It enables me to assess any risks and to talk with you about what you hope to gain in the sessions and how we can work towards that goal.
