About me and my therapy practice
Prior to training as a Counsellor I worked for many years at Humberside Police (and since qualifying as a Counsellor have worked a lot with emergency services employees). Alongside this, my hobby and interest was in health and fitness. I worked in health clubs and taught fitness classes. I focused on physical health and gained a real passion for well-being and helping people. From here, I began incorporating mental well-being, as I began to believe that the mind and body work together. It led me to start my counselling training in 2010 and so I genuinely come from a holistic approach. My core training was gained at The University of Hull with my Top Up Bachelors Degree gained at Leeds Beckett University. Since then I have progressed through the levels. I place an emphasis on Continual Professional Development and so I attend regular training courses and workshops to update my knowledge and skills. I have experience of working with clients on issues such as loss and bereavement at Cruse Bereavement Care and also worked for a short time, at the Oncology Department at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals. At Focus Counselling in Hull and Hull and East Yorkshire Mind, I worked with anxiety and depression on an Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) NHS initiative called 'Let's Talk.’
I am an Associate Counsellor for several Employee Assistance Programme Providers (EAPs).
I have been audited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). This means that they check to see that I am working ethically and meet their high standard which safeguards you as a client.
I am also a BACP ACCREDITED Counsellor. BACP accreditation schemes aim to recognise the achievement of high standards of knowledge, experience and development in counselling and psychotherapy.
I work a lot with self-referral private clients on a wide range of issues in my own private practice (A New Horizon).
Practice description
Need some help?
Stuck in grief?
Feeling stressed from life’s hecticness? Would you like to learn some new techniques to reset and boost your resilience?
Feeling really low for too long? Would you like to revive your energy levels?
Want to stop feeling so anxious?
Welcome and thank you for clicking onto my profile. I understand that looking for and reaching out to a counsellor can be daunting and you may be feeling a little apprehensive.
Counselling is not about me giving you advice, rather me working with you to help you explore your situation and find your own answers. To do this, I will provide you with a comfortable, safe and confidential space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Your journey of self-discovery and personal growth through therapy could lead you to being able to make any changes going forward.
How I Work
I work on a one-to-one basis offering the conditions of congruence, empathy and unconditional positive regard from the person-centred approach. I work from an Integrative perspective which means that I use tools from other theoretical approaches in whichever way suits you, as an individual client, the best as I believe that people are unique and therefore there is no ‘one size fits all' approach.
I can offer Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) looking at your negative, automatic thoughts and the impact on your feelings and behaviours. We can explore coping strategies, that work for you, for the short term and look at ways for you to live more positively.
I also work with clients long term exploring and addressing the root cause of the issue(s). This can be open-ended (not time-limited).
The client group that I tend to work more with are individual adults (over 18 years).
