About me and my therapy practice
I specialise in working with adults and teenagers with Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and parents of children with ARFID. I also work with 'picky eating' (not a label I like!) where the threshold for an ARFID diagnosis hasn't been met, or an ARFID assessment hasn't been sought. I don't work with eating challenges related to body dysmorphia (e.g., anorexia nervosa).
We all bring our own 'baggage' from how we were parented and the culture we grew up in, to the task of feeding children. If you are a parent or carer and you need a safe, non-judgemental space to process your own issues with food, I can help.
Or perhaps you want some support exploring your emotional and practical responses to your child's eating. Feeding children is really emotive; if it isn't going how you would like it to, this can be very distressing.
Maybe you are an adult who wants to broaden the range of foods they feel comfortable eating, or just wants to gain a better understanding of their relationship with food. I'd love to be alongside you on that journey.
I have a masters in humanistic counselling and a PhD in psychology (my PhD focused on parental feeding practices in the context of avoidant ('picky') eating, and I continue to be research-active in this area). I have an in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge of child-feeding and I train and supervise other professionals working in this field.
Practice description
I work (exclusively online) with clients all over the world. My background is in Humanistic counselling and I use Responsive Feeding Therapy (RFT) which is a gentle and client-centred approach. We'd only explore what you're ready to explore, at a pace set by you. Read more about RFT here: https://responsivefeedingpro.com/about-rft/
My first session
Our first session will be an assessment, where I can explain how I work, you can share more about what you're looking for, and we can make a decision about whether I'm the right therapist for you.
I'll ask you some questions about the presenting issue, and this first session will perhaps have a different feel from subsequent sessions, which will be less directive.
I'll also go through my client contract with you, so you are completely clear about your rights and obligations, and what to expect as we work together.
