About me and my therapy practice
I am a qualified counsellor and a disabled mixed race mother. So believe that counselling should be accessible to all. I have experience of supporting people with a variety of complex issues, ranging from depression to domestic abuse.
EXPRERIENCED RACISM OR DISABILITY HATE CRIME?
Race and Disability are 2 of the protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010, but inequality, discrimination and Hate Crime are still far too prevalent today, which we have especially seen and felt recently. After a hate crime, the focus is usually on the physical safety, and maybe the pursuit of justice. But not enough attention is given to impact on our mental health.
WHAT I CAN OFFER
Racism has an impact on a personal, social and an intergenerational level. I aim not to shy away from supporting the client to explore race related issues, such as the sort of stereotypes imposed upon us by others and the ones we internalise. By acknowledging these with client, we can then look at addressing them. I offer a safe space to work through the various forms of trauma linked to Hate Crime. I always strive to work in a non-judgmental and empowering way.
TIRED OF STRUGLING WITH CULTURAL AND IDENTITY ISSUES?
Each person's identity and sense of self is so wonderfully complex and multi-faceted. As a mixed race, woman of dual heritage, I have first-hand experience of how much of a minefield it can be making sense of our cultural heritage and identity.
WHAT I OFFER
I can offer clients a safe space where we can freely reflect on cultural influences and psychological patterns often taken on, consciously and subconsciously throughout their life. My counselling approach is Integrative, with a person-centred foundation. By having a deeper understanding of the problems faced, I aim to provide an empathic approach to addressing cultural issues in a sensitive way, that will empower the client to bring about the change they want.
