About me and my therapy practice
Whatever is leading you to come for counselling or therapy, we will work together, in a collaborative, secure and ethical way, to help you understand what it is in your life that is causing you to feel the way you do. I work primarily in a Gestalt way. This means that we work on what is happening for you in the here and now of your life. As we work together the echoes of the past will become apparent quite naturally, and we will work with them accordingly. Whatever the issue or issues are that you want to work on, they will be a part of your wider life, they don't exist in isolation, and we will view your issues as being very much a part of your whole of your life. The entirety of you; and work with you to help you understand just how such things impact other parts of your life. Working on your issues in this relational way benefits your life as a whole, and in this way has beneficial, far reaching effects for you. Resolution becomes a much more realistic achievement. I find that what appears to help my clients the most, is being able to share with me what it is that is happening to them, and to have that received in a welcoming, open, non-critical way which allows you to explore your own experience in a safe, constructive way. When we work together in this way, my clients often find themselves surprised at what it is we actually put our focus on in our sessions.Practice description
Working in a Gestalt way means that we work with the totality of you. Your thoughts (cognitively), your emotions (affectively) and your body (emobdied), and if you believe you have a spiritual element to yourself, in a spiritual (transpersonal) way too.
We will work in such a way that enables you become clear for yourself, rather than me 'tell' you how you need to be. This means that any changes that occur for you are likely to be better for you, because they arise from within you yourself, rather than from instruction by me. Such changes are more likely to be longer lasting for you....
My first session
We will use our first session together to see if we are suited to working together. If we are then we'll discuss future sessions together.
If you feel that I'm not for you then you can say so quite freely. it does happen between client and therapist sometimes for a host of reasons. If I feel I can't work with you for any reason, I'll communicate that to you too. If I can, I'll refer you to a colleague whom I feel will be suitable for you to work with.
As part of our first session we will 'contract' with one another as to how we will work together. Things such as length of sessions, how we would handle the subject of suicide if it arises, and other basics that will help us to create a 'safe container' for our therapeutic relationship.
We will hear what has brought you to therapy, and what it is you hope to achieve by coming to therapy, ensuring that we set expectations that are helpful and realistic.
The first session is always interesting, and, delightfully, very often surprising for people!
