About me and my therapy practice

I am a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist qualified to master's level registered and accredited with the BACP.  I have thirty years of experience providing therapy to adults, children, adolescents and families and supervision to trainees, therapists and frontline staff. I am also a trainer for the National Trauma Transformational programme and consider myself a Trauma-informed and responsive therapist.

I feel that anyone can experience distress and find themselves struggling. I offer my service as a space where we can think together, as a way to try and make sense of experiences and to better manage feelings.

The aim of therapy in my mind is often to try and make peace with our pasts, to make sense of our early experiences in order to live fully and authentically in the present. I explore the place of the problem in relation to the past as well as present, in a relational approach, that means we enter into a joint exploration of the issue. I work with a variety of issues and divide my time between clinics for the NHS & social work and private practice.

I completed a Masters in Psychoanalytic Therapeutic work with Children and Young People with Human Development Scotland and The University of Strathclyde. I have a Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling and Therapy with Manor House Centre for Psychotherapy, London and I have also completed levels 1 & 2 of Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy.

I am a full member of APPCIOS (Association of Psychodynamic Practitioners in Organisational Settings) and Mentor Lead in the organisation. I consult to CEO's and organisations who want to use psychodynamic thinking to explore institutional dynamics and develop reflective practice for staff.

Practice description

My practice is relational in essence which means that the therapeutic relationship itself is part of the process of healing.  We can learn through the live relationship in the room and through reflection on the unconscious aspects of the relationship.

I work in a collaborative explorative way with a clearly defined set of goals.  We measure our progress against these goals and set a course.

Although primarily a narrative therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy invites creative thinking about dreams, writing and artwork.  I welcome any form of expression that helps me understand you better.

I do think it’s important to get a good fit with your therapist so feel free to make an appointment to meet for an initial assessment, which is an exploration of the issue and where we can see how it feels to work together.

Email me at veronica.ohare@outlook.com, call or text 07386 892070. I am happy to talk through your enquiry first over the phone.

My first session

We can start by having an initial chat over the phone or via video, to see how it might feel to work together.  Alternatively you can go ahead and book a consultation after just emailing me.

A consultation can take one session or more sometimes, and I feel that it is important we take however long we need as it is where we set out the job of work to be done and decide if we think it is achievable.

We will need to consider...

  • What is the problem?
  • What do we think has caused this problem?
  • What do you want to achieve or change?
  • Can this kind of therapy help?

If yes, then we set a treatment plan.

Then I would want to know...

  • Your history
  • The onset of the problem
  • Any previous experience of therapy
  • Any risks
  • Current situation

This process helps us to produce a map that we can navigate which means we both have an understanding of the problem and an idea of what it is that has caused the problem and what it is that needs to be done to resolve the issue and for you to feel better and heal.

Email me at veronica.ohare@outlook.com, call or text 07386 892070.

I am happy to talk through your enquiry first over the phone and if necessary direct you to another therapist who may be better placed to support you.

Availability

I currently have some availability and can offer psychodynamic supervision online on Fridays.

You may be a qualified psychodynamic therapist, or be working psychodynamically or be interested in bring psychodynamic thinking to your work role - I encourage an initial session where we can both see how it might feel to work together.

About me and my therapy practice

I am a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist with over 30 years' experience of offering therapy within mental health services. I offer clinical supervision to psychotherapists and counsellors and therapeutic supervision to CEO's, mentors, coaches, social workers, health professionals and anyone who is engaged in human encounters who would like to think about the unconscious processes at play in their work and their organisations.

I am fully trauma informed and responsive in my work and teach on the NTTP (National Trauma Training Programme).

In 2018 I undertook Supervision training with APPCIOS (Association of Psychodynamic Practitioners in Organisational Settings)  the model of which is a systems-psychoanalytic framework based on the Tavistock consultation model.

The systems psychodynamic approach recognizes the value of a space in which one can reflect on work and practice, continue to develop and deepen learning. Supervision is increasingly recognised by practitioners and organisations as an ethical part of professional practice and CPD for many practitioners.

I currently offer supervision in a one to one or group setting with more experienced practitioners, online and face to face.  Groups are kept small enough so that all participants have an opportunity to present their current work and to benefit from the input of their group colleagues.

Please do contact me for more information about supervision.

Practice description

With regard to supervision sessions I encourage the supervisee to lead the session bringing their work in whichever way they feel it is right for them.  This might be a process recording, or a theme across sessions or an issue they have identified from their own reflections, it might equally be dreams, artwork and creative writing.

I am always keen to explore relevant theory in relation to practice and I encourage the development of formulations and hypothesis to provide focus and a framework for the work.

As with a psychodynamic model of therapy in supervision I remain open and curious about the unconscious processes as they occur for the supervisee in the work, in our relationship and live in the session.

I am a firm believer that supervision has the potential to be a transformative space whereby we explore feelings and thoughts that are often confusing, powerful and complex, where we can be open to the actual emotional responses we are having in relation to our client.  And that it is in these moments we access the unconscious material that clients need us to carry, and tolerate in order that they can be metabolized for them.

As a reflexive practitioner I need to recognise my biases and be open to the lens with which I come to the work, and I remain open to learning from others and their experience.

My first session

In the first supervision session I would like to get to know you and your work setting and your experience.  It would also be useful to hear about other experiences you have had of clinical supervision and your thoughts and wishes for supervision with me.

Please feel free to ask me about my experiences or practice too as we need to get to know each other.
