About me and my therapy practice

I am an experienced psychotherapist, EMDR therapist and clinical supervisor with over 15 years experience in practice.  I am an accredited member of the BACP, and work in private practice as well as in the charity sector.  I have set up and manage a busy a counselling service in Poole, Dorset (The Dorset Practice, and Poole Community Counselling CIC).

I work with individuals and couples, recognising that as inherently relational beings, we exist in connection with ourselves, others, and the environment in which we live.  My approach is primarily relational, integrating elements of CBT, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Existential Therapy, and drawing on the principles of attachment theory.

As an EMDR therapist, I specialise in using Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing to help individuals navigate and process traumatic experiences, fostering healing and resilience.

I have worked in a residential rehab in Thailand and contributed to writing the CBT based 8-week programme there.  I spent a year and a half in Thailand and took the opportunity to spend time in a Buddhist temple where I trained with the monks in Buddhism & Mindfulness.

I have worked extensively with adult survivors of childhood abuse and contributed to a book which was published by the charity, Counselling Adult Survivors of Childhood Abuse, from hurting to healing, published in 2017.

Relationships can be challenging at times, and I enjoy helping couples reconnect where ruptures have taken place.  I trained at the Tavistock centre for relationship counselling, and a few years later furthered my training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples (www.beftcentre.org)

I draw on various therapeutic models depending on the presenting problem and client needs.

Practice description

I have many years experience as a psychotherapist, clinical supervisor and more recently as an EMDR therapist.

In the therapeutic journey, you can expect a space to safety explore all aspects of the self; past, present and future.  We will work collaboratively to facilitate growth, development and healing.  Confidentiality in our work is paramount in order to foster safety and support to process and grow.

I have extensive training in various therapeutic models; Existential, Psychodynamic, EMDR, CBT, Emotionally Focused Therapy (attachment based),  and Schema Therapy.

I draw on various therapeutic models when working with clients depending on what feels most helpful and beneficial to the therapeutic process.

I also work as a clinical supervisor and enjoy supporting trainee counsellors reach their potential as counsellors throughout their training and beyond.

My first session

The first appointment can feel quite difficult to come to, but I will try to make you feel at ease. I will ask some background questions about childhood, upbringing and any significant events that may have led to coping strategies developing.

Coping strategies are often developed in childhood and are helpful at the time. As adults we find it hard to recognise these strategies and they are often so ingrained in us that we find it hard to shift them.

This is where Psychotherapy can really benefit to help you recognise patterns of behaviour, and slowly learn to shift these patterns leading to insight and personal growth.

What I can help with

Abuse, Anger management, Anxiety, Bereavement, Cancer, Child related issues, Depression, Eating disorders, Health related issues, Infertility, Loss, Obsessions, OCD, Personal development, Post-traumatic stress, Redundancy, Relationships, Self esteem, Service veterans, Stress, Trauma, Work related issues

About me and my therapy practice

I am an accredited member of the BACP with over 15 years experience as a therapist in various settings; private practice, charitable organisations and residential.  I am a trained psychotherapist, clinical supervisor and work with individuals, couples and young people (YP).

With a Masters degree in Psychotherapy & Counselling I have extensive training in various therapeutic models; Existential, psychodynamic, Schema Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples, EMDR and CBT.

I work with Young Persons through the Family Counselling Trust.

I work as a clinical supervisor, and trainer in private practice and at STARS Dorset.

I work long term and short term with clients.

Practice description

Making the decision to start having therapy can be daunting and feel quite overwhelming.  I work relationally taking into account childhood and any significant events that may have an impact on where you are now.

Our family of origin is our first experience of being in relationship.  We develop coping strategies according to the quality of the relationships and the events that take place throughout our lives; but early attachment relationships will have an impact on our adult relationships.

I tend to work with clients to explore your history, and how your past impacts on your present.  Everything makes sense in context, so for example, if you are brought up in an environment where you never feel safe, you are likely to be quite sensitive to any triggers that  lead to you feeling unsafe.

I have worked extensively with adult survivors of childhood abuse and work collaboratively with you as the client exploring your past, your present, and support to make lasting changes for your future.

I draw on various therapeutic models depending on the presenting issues and client needs.  CBT can be helpful in identifying unhelpful thinking patters, EMDR has proven to be particularly helpful in trauma and PTSD, and working with attachment theory is particularly helpful when working with individuals and couples who have experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

I have worked with couples for many years having trained at the Tavistock centre for relationship counselling, and a few years later trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples.

About me and my therapy practice

I work integratively drawing on the therapeutic models I have trained in; existential/humanistic, CBT, EMDR, Schema Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Psychodynamic and I have also trained in Mindfulness and Yoga.

I offer a space where clinic work can be discussed non-judgementally, explored collaboratively, and want to encourage practitioners to develop and deepen their professional practice.

Counselling is a really important role, and it is rewarding, but can also be emotionally draining and sometimes it an feel isolating.  The ability to share work and to feel supported is very important and will enhance your work as a therapist.

Practice description

My initial supervision training was with Dr Zoe Pool, and Prof. Michael Jacobs in 2018. It was focused on offering supervision to counsellors working with adult survivors of childhood abuse.

I am now completing a Diploma in Supervision at the Iron Mill in Exeter and will endeavour to continue in my professional development as a supervisor.

I will normally meet supervisees for either 60 minutes or 90 minutes depending on needs and will work collaboratively with supervisees to support development, learning and reflexivity.

My first session

The first session will normally be about introducing myself and how I work. To explore the needs and what each therapist wants from supervision.  We will talk about contracting and what to expect.  We will talk about what I can and cannot offer as a supervisor, and hopefully it will lead to a successful working alliance.
