About me and my therapy practice

I've been a Counsellor and Psychotherapist since 1990, having trained as a Psychoanalytic & Jungian Therapist  & Chartered Psychologist. I've been a Visiting Professor in Psychoanalysis at Masaryk University since 2009 and I was the Clinical Lead of an NHS Psychotherapy Service.

I provide Counselling & Psychotherapy online for anyone worldwide & I work face to face using walking psychotherapy and counselling near where I live in Seaton, Devon - walking with clients along the beach or in the nearby bird sanctuary. Walking in a natural environment can be a relaxing and healthy way of making use of psychotherapy and counselling.

I worked in the NHS for 15 years and so I am very practical in my work, trying always to approach a better understanding of the client and share this understanding with them. In this way I provide a space in which the client can become more honest with themselves and increase their integrity and coherence with themselves, with their environment and with the people around them

You can have sessions; once, twice or three times a week. The therapy costs £65 once a week, £60 twice a week and £55 three times a week. There are some concessions for people on a low income, for example, students.

Besides individual therapy, I provide couple therapy, This costs £80 for 60 minutes.

I also provide supervision for Psychoanalytic or Jungian psychotherapists and for counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists and trainees. The supervision costs £65 once a week and £70 at less frequent intervals.

Practice description

I qualified as a Psychodynamic Counsellor in 1989, as a Chartered Psychologist in 1996, as a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist in 2000 & as a Psychoanalytic Supervisor in 2001. I have had a private counselling & psychotherapy practice since 1990 and I've been a Visiting Professor, teaching psychoanalytic psychotherapy at Masaryk University in the Czech Republic since 2009.I’m therefore a Jungian and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist and Chartered Psychologist.

I provide the following services

Psychoanalytic & Jungian Psychotherapy

I work using a combination of Jungian and Psychoanalytic theories. This combination is quite common in the UK for example, in the trainings at the Guild of Psychotherapists and the Society of Analytical Psychologists. It is a method of therapy which aims to increase self understanding and emotional resilience. It therefore helps clients to become less controlled by their past and by emotional blocks, helping them become truer to themselves.

Couple Counselling

I provide counselling for couples, both straight and gay, who are experiencing trouble in their relationship. This sometimes results in people developing and salvaging a strained relationship and sometimes it results in people concluding that the relationship is not a good enough fit and that they would be better off separating.

Supervision

I also provide supervision for psychotherapists, counsellors, psychologists & psychiatrists - both students and fully qualified therapists and you are welcome to contact me to discuss this further. The way I work is roughly similar to that outlined in Patrick Casement's book "On Learning from the Patient" If you have any questions about how I work or how I can help, please get in touch.

My first session

In the first session we'll try to understand whether we can work together. From my point of view, this entails me understanding whether what I offer as a therapist is suitable for your needs.

I'll also try to gain an understanding of your life history in this first session and of any difficulties you have had in your life and why you want to engage in therapy now.

In my work, I combine Psychoanalysis, Jungian therapy and Stress management.

Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysts try to understand the underlying meaning of what the client is saying - whether that is in the description of what happened to them that day or in the description of a dream. By bringing together these understandings, the therapist is trying to get a picture of the client's internal world and to try to question dysfunctional narratives and defences which inhabit this internal world.

Jungian Therapy

Freud saw the unconscious as a wild, unruly entity, which needed to be tamed. Jungians, on the other hand, embrace the unconscious as a good and creative  area to be celebrated and engaged with, seeing therapy more as a process of personal development than as a cure for an ailment. As part of this they also embrace traditions from India and China and use creative  ways of exploring the unconscious such as meditation, visualisation, painting, photography and dreams. They also encourage clients to become the best version of themselves - their true selves.

Stress Management

This is generally provided during the process of therapy and includes; relaxation techniques, mindfulness, meditation & visualisation. There is a page on Stress Management, Meditation & Visualisation on my website.
