About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I have worked in Brighouse, since 2013 as an integrative psychotherapist. I have a dedicated counselling room in Rastrick, but I can also work using Zoom.
I work with individuals and couples. (I also offer supervision to counsellors and those in training)
I believe we are all products of our experiences, and our genetics, nothing about us is 'right' or 'wrong', we are all unique.
Unfortunately the world is a very tough, critical place and even harmful. This can become unmanageable, resulting in anxiety or depression. Asking for help to get back on track is courageous.
Some individuals may have specific reasons which can make it harder to manage life, these may present as ADHD or ADD. I support those seeking diagnosis or wanting strategies to help manage their life in a calmer way.
I aim to work in a way that suits you, helping you to reflect and be inquisitive about beliefs and patterns of behaviour. We will talk about your childhood, and explore habits and beliefs you might have developed from your family. We may talk about what it is to be you, your understanding of the world and how you see yourself. I also find it useful to work creatively using drawing or objects when words don't seem to be good enough.
For couples I can offer a space where we unpick and work towards changing patterns of behaviours and reactivity that cause dissatisfaction in your relationship. I believe it is not helpful to blame anyone when a relationship is struggling, it is more useful to understand how you both contribute to the problems.
Mindfulness is important in my practice. I work in a compassionate, non-judgemental way, and offer the opportunity to learn how to apply mindfulness in your life, if you feel this might help. Mindfulness is proven as a useful therapeutic intervention in anxiety and depression.
Practice description
I trained as an Integrative therapist; I am able to apply different therapies to help you. My main models are Person Centred, existential and psychodynamic.
I am also a Mindfulness teacher. Mindfulness has been shown to be of particular benefit for depression and anxiety. I run the MBSR course.
I provide a contract which clarifies issues with confidentiality. I also have an attendance policy where missed appointments need to be paid for.
I have professional and public liability insurance to work as a psychotherapist, mindfulness teacher.
I offer appointments during the day and on a Wednesday evening. I encourage weekly appointments if possible. Each appointment lasts an hour. The first appointment is an assessment and is £35. I also have dedicated couples appointments.
I am flexible so you do not need to have the same appointment each week although it can help.
Therapy itself can last a few weeks to several years. I do not limit how long I will work with you, we can decide what feels most appropriate for you.
Finally, therapy is most importantly about whether two people can talk, be honest and trust each other especially through tough times. I always feel it an honour when someone feels they want to take that risk.
My first session
Our first appointment allows us to see whether we can work together. There is no commitment.
It is important you feel that I can offer you what you want, and that you feel I can understand you.
I also need to assess whether I can provide you with what you need.
This appointment lasts 1 hour. There is some administrative work, I will gather some basic information, and give you my contract which includes a privacy agreement and my cancellation policy, this might take 10 minutes. I will then tell you about how I work.
For most of the appointment you can tell me about yourself, your problems, how you think they might have arisen. I will ask some questions for clarification.
Finally I will summarise what I understand of your concerns and share how I might be able to help.

About me and my therapy practice
I am an integrative psychotherapist and my supervision model is based on the 7-Eyed model of Hawkins and Shohet. This model emphasises the relationships that occur within the supervisee and client matrix and the supervisor and supervisee matrix and the context of the individuals, and any organisational impact.
I incorporate a cyclical model which helps manage each supervision from beginning, identifying the work for the session, to action points at the end.
If you are a student our supervision will be in conjunction with the requirements of your placement and training body. Supervision may feel daunting, I provide a safe and supportive space to voice confusion, doubts, insecurities whilst monitoring a safe and ethical practice. We all begin somewhere, and I aim to enable you to become an informed, confident and effective practitioner.
I incorporate mindfulness in my work and this may be a specialism you seek support for.
Supervision has many aspects and I am comfortable working with what is important to you, this may be specific client work and interventions, ethical dilemma's, identification of CPD, seeking resources and importantly checking you are adequately nourished and resourced to work professionally. I am able to support you in career development.
Practice description
I am an integrative therapist.
Sessions will be up to 1hour 30 mins.
We will contract for our work together, and agree roles and responsibilities, especially regarding ethical frameworks we adhere to in our work.
I work form a private room and can also offer supervision on line.
I will particularly work at a relational level, exploring how each of our roles impact in the client space, and optimising this for the benefit of the client.
Supervision is based on trust, this does not necessarily happen immediately. It is therefore important to review our work and I incorporate this into our contracting.
Supervision is also for recognising the impact of organisations on counselling work. It be useful when exploring the structures and systems in place and the impact this has on your work.
The client is at the centre of most of supervision, I invite you to describe your clients, their concerns and your focus. We then can explore how your relationship might impact the work. I will offer a curiosity and inquisitively that aims to open up and explore other interpretations and understanding of the client work. I then support you as you determine your future interventions.
If you are an experienced practitioner our work will be collaborative and explorative.
I hope to form long term working relationships with my supervisees.
My first session
In this first session we will clarify the contract, this is likely to need reviewing periodically. The contract will define expectations such as contacting out of agreed sessions. I will expect to know which professional body you are a member of and be informed of their Ethical code of conduct.
I aim to address power dynamics that will be present. This will not mitigate for them but it can help us to be mindful how they might impact on out work.
We will determine a frequency for our appointments.
I will explain my model and the structure to expect in each session.
I will invite you to tell me about your current practice, level of experience and the organisation you work for. I will share relevant information about my training and experience.
The first session is the start of what can be a long professional relationship. As such it might be that clients are not discussed. I advise that if you need to discuss a client we contract immediately to do this and incorporate this in our opening meeting.
I look forward to journeying alongside you in a counselling career.
