Practice description

What is counselling and how can it help?

Counselling is a talking therapy; it is an opportunity to talk with a trained professional who will offer a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space for you to explore any difficulties you may be experiencing.

Talking with a counsellor offers the opportunity for you to explore and find your own insight and understanding of your problem, and to make decisions about any changes you would like to make. Counselling is also useful in helping you to come to terms with those things that cannot be changed.

I am an integrative counsellor, which means that I work flexibly, using a variety of approaches that are tailored specifically to meet your needs. My theoretical base is person centred counselling, which acknowledges the importance of the relationship between client and counsellor, which is why I offer a free introductory telephone call where we can discuss what you would like from counselling, what I offer and to see if we feel comfortable working together.

I offer both short-term counselling and longer-term counselling/psychotherapy. Short-term counselling generally focuses on a specific issue in the present day, whereas longer-term counselling/psychotherapy tends to focus on deeper issues that may have been causing distress for a while.

My first session

At our first meeting we will take some time to explore what brings you to counselling, what you would like from our counselling sessions and how we might work together to achieve those goals.

I will need to take some brief details and ask you a few questions, and you will also have the opportunity to ask me any questions you may have. We will agree the boundaries of our work together including how and when we will meet, confidentiality, contact out of session, fees etc

Within the counselling sessions, my role is not to tell you what to do, but to work alongside you, supporting you in exploring and understanding what is troubling you, and helping you to connect to your own answers and resources in order to find resolution.
