About me and my therapy practice
My work with couples is informed by the internationally recognised IMAGO method, created by Harville Hendrix, PhD and Helen La Kelly Hunt, PhD authors of the best selling book 'Getting the Love You Want'. The back cover of the book states that this approach 'has helped millions of people experience more satisfying relationships .. by reviving romance and removing negativity from daily interactions.'
What I loved about this method is the positively engaging way the relationship develops and grows. It is nothing like what is seen on the TV- Couples Counselling. It helps people to discover
- why you chose your mate
-resolve power struggles and create greater emotional intimacy
- learn to really listen
-Increase the fun and laughter in the relationship
- Achieve a shared vision of your dream relationship.
Whatever brings you to couples counselling this approach offers a way of communicating that is positive and mutually affirming whilst enabling you both to safely say and hear from each other the difficult things that are weighing the relationship down and offering techniques to find the connection together to be able to manage and deal with the difficulties.
Practice description
Sessions of 1.5 hours work best, as this allows enough time for both people to 'have their turn'. Cost wise this = £90 per session.
The couple will be asked to sit facing each other with me sitting closely beside then, to assist each person in the 'dialoguing' process which creates the 'bridge of connection' within their relationship through talking and listening to each other.
I request that I am able to video the sessions for my own supervision. I offer a 'strict' policy about confidentiality to do this. You are able to have a copy if you want one.
The sessions are usually fortnightly and both parties need to be present at every session.
I am not able to work individually with people who I work with as a couple.
There will be 'homework' tasks for you to complete together outside the sessions.
My first session
Before the first session I will share my 'working contract' with you and ask you to complete some basic demographic data and information.
The first session is for one hour and gives you a chance to tell me why you are here, get to know me and introduces you to this method of working. At the end you will be asked to leave and then consider together if IMARGO therapy is for you as a couple and book your second appointment a few days later, if you want to. There is no obligation to continue if you don't want to.
The sessions are structured with a set pattern of communication, which you will be gradually introduced to and which is built up/ added to with each attendance. Successful termination is usually somewhere between 6-10 sessions. There is no set number of sessions to attend.

About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I am Gwynneth
I have had a private counselling practice in the centre of Goole, East Yorkshire for 20years. I am passionate about my practice because I have seen people make positive change during the time they have worked with me and because during this time I have 'had' counselling so I am living being a 'better me' because of counselling too. It is true 'Counselling Changes life's !' and I offer that commitment within the counselling relationship for you to change your life for 'your' better. I was not born in Yorkshire, but I am told that I share the same Yorkshire way of being 'down to earth' and 'being myself' ,whilst 'saying it as it is'.
I began my career as a Mental Health Nurse 40 years ago and still remain a nurse. It was whilst working in the NHS that I got introduced to 'talking therapies' in the eighties. This enables people to learn about themselves and how to care for their psychological self, to find their key to thriving emotionally in an unpredictable and impactful world. Once I discovered, what was then describes as an 'alternative' way of working and living, I have 'practiced what I preached' and lived and worked according to my discoveries recognising my ability to 'think and feel' for myself allows me to know and care for myself well.
Safety for my clients and myself is important in my practice. To manage this I access supervision, personal therapy and continuing training, to keep me update and 'fresh'. As a 'professionally registered counsellor' I abide by the BACP ethical codes which offers the professional structure of safety and containment for safe working. I network with my peers and attend national conferences to ensure my connection with organisational affiliations and best practice. Whenever I can I participate in formal academic/ scientific research and I do conduct small scale research / feedback studies to develop new and better understandings of the ways of working in counselling within my practice or to assist larger studies.
Practice description
I work with individuals, couples or friend parings , families and groups. I work by face to face, telephone or online, or a hybrid selection of some or all of these. This makes me accessible to work with clients throughout Great Britain.
For people living abroad, although it is possible to work 'virtually' , we will need to discuss the logistics of each person's situation to ensure safety before we can commit to an 'international' counselling relationship.
To find my premises, I am situated off the main street in central Goole, East Yorkshire, which offers free parking, it is about 1 mile from Junction 36 of the M62, which links with the M18/ M180. Electric vehicle charging is available in the super market across the road. Within a few minutes walk there are the town's good bus and train services. My office is part of a community centre, so fully accessible and has a 'conservatory space' to sit and relax before or after a session and a café providing excellent food and beverages.
The reception is a warm and welcoming area, discretely managed to provide a friendly and respectful greeting. I will personally wait in this area for your arrival to greet you and guide you to my office which is without advertisement.
I offer a warm and sincere welcome to all my clients, positively welcoming people with difference and diversity within my practice.
My first session
Your new opportunity !
We've all had difficult first meetings with someone, so I aim for that not to be the case with me. I am friendly, caring and will be purposeful, interested in how I can help you. Working at your pace, together we will learn what brings you to counselling. I will explain the safety features of my work, which is important for you to know, even if you are not sure what brings you to counselling at this point. I will ask / need some information about you and you will find your psychological story will grow as we work together.
I work in a therapeutic way describes as 'relational' , which means I use my thinking and feelings, my understanding of you and my sense of being with you to discover with you, what is happening, what is needed and how you or I can help. My aim is to create a safe space where curiosity and openness between us will support you in your understanding of what you are experiencing and why and what you need to progress to your aim/ goal for being in counselling.
Everyone one is different and I aim to help you find 'you' from the moment we meet.
