About me and my therapy practice

I am a COSRT senior accredited therapist and supervisor as well as BACP registered and NCIP senior accredited.

I specialise in working with couples and individuals on relationship and psychosexual issues.

I also work with individuals on all the issues affecting their lives, helping them to gain perspective on what they feel and need from life at that time.

I am also a counselling course teacher who has worked for many years teaching and supervising both specialist psychosexual and relationship therapists as well as general psychotherapists and counsellors.

I am an integrative, humanistic practitioner who brings in different approaches to the work depending on what seems appropriate and helpful for the individual clients.

I particularly resonate with attachment theory, as this helps to understand our relationship dynamics, why we are affected by others in our particular way and what we are pulled towards in others, whether helpfully or not!

I also like to consider an existential aspect to the work - what do the clients value in their lives, what gives them a sense of meaning? If they don't know, can I help them think about this to make life feel fuller or more fitting with how they want it to be. In relationships, do they communicate in a way that helps to feel closer and to have a shared vision of their lives together?

Practice description

When working with couples, I see them together from the start, rather than seeing people individually and then together. People come to me for relationship issues, such as difficulty in working through affairs or resolving arguments. They may also come because of sexual difficulties. Of course, they may have a combination of issues to discuss.

I prefer to focus on what is currently happening with clients rather than on their past histories, although it can be helpful to consider clients' backgrounds and with couples, how this may affect their current dynamics. I also focus on how clients can gain awareness with a view to resolving difficulties. We typically work closely on improving communication to help gain empathy and understanding.

My first session

The first session will be charged for, as with subsequent sessions. It provides a chance to understand why clients have come to therapy, whether I can help and whether we can relate helpfully to each other.  Clients can then decide whether they would like to continue working with me. I also make a dcision as to whether I think I may be helpful to them.

I often give homework at the end of this first session to be discussed at the next one that gives us more background and begins the work.
