About me and my therapy practice

Do you ever feel listened to but not heard? Hello, I have been a practising counsellor for 20 years and have been accredited with the BACP since 2012. I am based in Solihull and Tamworth and provide face to face and online therapy.

I work therapeutically with adults, young people, and children with a wide range of difficulties and see all my clients as individuals. I will take time to listen and to hear you.

Being heard and not just listened to brings a feeling of empowerment. One difference with supporting children rather than adults, is that they do not always have the words to describe how they are feeling or what they want to be conveyed. Bringing art and play into the therapy room can allow the young person to have these words.

You will experience no hierarchy in the room which allows the individual to express themselves freely. I will give you a safe time and place to talk without feeling judged. I will help you to make sense of things and understand the true you. I will support you by empowering you to resolve complicated feelings or find ways to live with them. By helping you recognise what is working for you and what is hindering you in moving forward, will help you find your own solutions. You will explore your options, develop strategies, and increase your self-awareness. I believe therapy takes strength and is not a sign of weakness.

Bereavement is one of my specialised areas. The power an individual can feel by being able to share memories of their special person with someone who has never met that person, can allow them to have a positive grief journey. It can take the pressure off the individual in getting the memory right, allowing them to concentrate on their memories. I feel honoured to work with families including the person who is ill to explore life experiences and memories. These can be so powerful for families bringing laughter, fun and togetherness.

Practice description

In my time of working as a counsellor, I have set up and developed 2 bereavement services for children and their parents/guardians. These services were able to support young people not just through their grief but also through mental health difficulties.

I have also processed many referrals for ASD (Autism) assessments having recognised signs that an individual may be Autistic. I have also supported adults and young people post diagnosis of ASD in understanding and accepting themselves as true individuals.

I have also helped coordinate a service for adult victims of crime and set up a service for children who are direct and indirect victims of crime.

I provide training for professionals including the education system in Northern Ireland called “Lost Voices” which focuses on young people being able to have a voice and be heard.

As adults to be able to be there for others we need to understand and take time for ourselves. Therapy can provide this time and space to explore.

Over the last 7 years, whilst working for a large hospice, I have been involved in many media projects such as ITV central news, CBBC Newsround and was chosen to be on “The Great Daffodil” panel along with famous stars already in the media.

I have development booklets to help families through difficult times and empowered a young person to write his own 76-page book and become an author at the age of 10 which reached number 1 best seller on Amazon UK and USA.

I also provide clinical supervision for other counsellors and school staff to help support them in their practice.

My first session

For therapy to be successful, there needs to be a relationship of trust in the counselling room. If you are thinking about counselling and need to talk it through first and how it will all work, please contact me by phone 07900810348 or email ann_doherty@hotmail.co.uk . We can have a chat without any pressure. This will enable you to decide whether I am the right person for you. This first 15 minute contact session is free. If you do not feel that connection, hopefully I will be able to recommend another counsellor to meet your needs.
