About me and my therapy practice
I have over 30 years of experience in heath support roles and over 20 years counselling experience. I've worked with anxiety and depression, chronic illness, stress, relationship difficulties, trauma, abuse and bereavement. I've counselled in a service for adult survivors of child sexual abuse, with Cruse Bereavement Care and also with Relationships Scotland Couple Counselling. I've also held management roles within an HIV service, a sexual abuse counselling service, an in-care survivors’ service, and a sexual abuse training and psychotherapy service for people with a learning disability. I've been a member of various Cross Party working groups and expert reference groups advising the Scottish Government on sexual abuse issues and strategy.
In addition to holding a Masters in Social Work and Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy I've also undertaken specialised psychotherapy training in trauma, bereavement, relationships and learning disability.
My varied background enables me to work sensitively and effectively with the range of experiences that individuals bring, including personal difficulties or/and a desire for deepening self awareness.
I believed deeply in the potential benefit of counselling having personally witnessed how it helps the people I support find relief from their distress and achieve personal growth.
My aim is to provide a warm, welcoming, professional and ethical service that enables people to find a sense of well-being and personal fulfillment in their life and relationships.
In addition to my practice from EH1 Therapies I also offer sessions from Starbank Road, EH5.
My website www.marniecollin.com gives more detailed information.
Practice description
I would describe myself as an integrative therapist as I use a combined approach to psychotherapy drawn from various influences and trainings.
My original Diploma combined theoretical insights from the psychodynamic and person-centred traditions and I identified as a psychodynamic practitioner on completion of that training and continue to utilise psychodynamic thinking in current practice. This means that I believe in the importance of the unconscious and past experience in shaping current behaviour. Working in this way I aim to build an accepting and trusting relationship where both of us can be actively involved in the therapy. Through this an understanding of the client’s inner world and its influence over past and present can come into awareness and enable the possibility of change.
The therapy I offer is also influenced by Gestalt psychotherapy where the primary aim is the development of awareness as a means of increasing people's choice and flexibility. I also draw on learning from the various training courses that I have attended where I believe that will benefit the client, for example mindful compassion or sensorimotor psychotherapy.
I am able to offer short term counselling for dealing with immediate issues (minimum of 8 sessions) or longer term psychotherapy (months or years) to work with more complex or longstanding issues. I am fully committed to providing a respectful and non-judgemental service which is offered at a pace that suits your needs.
My first session
To help make the decision whether to access counselling I offer an initial consultation session with the aim of allowing each of us to explore if my counselling approach will be of benefit or whether some other source of support may be more suitable. This session enables you to tell me about what it is that is leading you to seek support and to ask any questions. It gives you a chance to see if working with me feels right for you.
The first session lasts for up to 50 minutes and there is no obligation to proceed further if you decide not to proceed to counselling/psychotherapy sessions.
