About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I'm Tracy Simpson, a BACP and NCPS-registered counsellor and psychotherapist based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, with over 15 years of experience supporting individuals and couples.

My private counselling practice provides a confidential and welcoming environment where you can explore difficult emotions, behaviours, and thoughts without fear of judgment. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, or navigating relationship challenges, I offer tailored therapy to help you feel heard, supported, and empowered to make positive changes.

I understand how overwhelming it can feel when sadness or stress takes over, often leaving you with a sense of hopelessness or lack of direction. My integrative approach includes Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), a practical and effective method to help manage negative thought patterns, behaviours, and emotional responses. This can be particularly helpful for anxiety, depression, and stress management, giving you tools to regain control and improve your well-being.

For deeper-rooted issues, such as past trauma or childhood experiences, I draw on Humanistic and Psychodynamic therapies to explore the underlying causes of distress. I aim to help you reconnect with your sense of self, rebuild confidence, and navigate life's challenges with clarity and purpose. Whether you’re experiencing relationship difficulties, a low mood, or need someone to listen, I am here to support you.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me via phone or email to discuss how counselling can help you take the first step toward healing. Together, we can work toward a brighter future and a renewed well-being.

Practice description

If you’re feeling sad, overwhelmed, or weighed down by anxiety, depression, or low self-confidence, reaching out for support can feel like a big step. My practice is designed to make this process approachable and supportive, offering a space to explore your concerns without judgment. Together, we can untangle what’s holding you back, whether rooted in childhood, relationships, or current worries.

As a therapist, my focus is on helping you find solutions. Many clients benefit from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which provides practical strategies to manage stress, low mood, or self-esteem issues. CBT helps identify and challenge negative thought patterns, allowing you to change behaviours and regain control. Alongside CBT, I use other approaches, including solution-focused therapy, mindfulness, and psychodynamic methods, to ensure the therapy suits your specific needs.

I also provide couples therapy for those navigating relationship challenges. This can help rebuild trust, improve communication, and strengthen connections. If you’re struggling with family dynamics or recovering from trauma, my tailored approach ensures you feel supported every step of the way.

Therapy with me isn’t just about understanding your difficulties; it’s about equipping you with tools to create lasting change. Whether you’re looking to overcome anxiety, address feelings of sadness or loss, or rebuild confidence, I am here to help you find clarity, relief, and a brighter future. Contact me today to begin your journey

My first session

The first counselling session is essential to understanding your challenges and building a supportive therapeutic relationship. My goal is to provide a calm, confidential space where you feel comfortable discussing what’s troubling you, whether it’s anxiety, low self-esteem, or relationship difficulties. I understand this step can feel daunting, and I will guide you through the process with empathy and care.

We’ll begin with an open conversation about what has brought you to counselling and what you’d like to achieve. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed by stress, struggling with sadness, or dealing with unresolved past experiences, this session is about exploring your concerns safely and non-judgmentally. I’ll ask questions like, “What has been most challenging for you recently?” or “How would you like things to change?” to help us focus on your priorities.

We’ll explore patterns in your thoughts, emotions, or behaviours and how they affect your well-being. We’ll identify initial goals and outline a therapy plan tailored to your needs. We will use techniques like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help challenge negative thought patterns and develop practical coping strategies.

Example of a First Session

If you’ve come to counselling feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, we might discuss how it affects your life, such as avoiding situations or struggling with racing thoughts. We could explore when these feelings began and what might be triggering them. By the end of the session, you’ll have a clearer understanding of how therapy can help, and we’ll identify small, manageable steps to reduce your anxiety and regain control.

Moving Forward

The first session is about building trust and setting the foundation for our work together. From here, we’ll create a personalised approach to help you feel more confident, address your challenges, and achieve meaningful change. Whether you’re seeking clarity, relief, or new coping strategies, I am here to support you every step of the way.

Practice Description

My counselling supervision services are designed to foster growth, clarity, and confidence in your therapeutic work. Supervision is not just about meeting professional requirements; it’s about creating a space where you can reflect deeply on your practice, explore client cases, and develop strategies to manage the emotional demands of your role.

As a BACP and NCPS-registered supervisor, I collaborate with you to explore the challenges and complexities of counselling practice. Whether you are navigating ethical dilemmas, feeling stuck with a particular client case, or looking to refine your therapeutic approach, I provide a supportive yet structured environment to guide you. My supervision practice emphasises reflective learning, practical solutions, and professional growth tailored to your needs as a counsellor.

Using evidence-based techniques such as CBT and reflective tools, I help counsellors identify patterns in their work, develop new insights, and expand their skills. Our sessions also address important aspects of counselling supervision, such as maintaining professional boundaries, self-care, and enhancing clinical outcomes. I aim to mentor and empower you, helping you meet the ethical and professional standards of bodies like BACP and NCPS while fostering your confidence and autonomy.

My first session

The First Supervision Session

The first supervision session is an opportunity to establish a strong foundation for our work together. We’ll explore your supervision goals, theoretical orientation, and any specific areas where you feel you need support. Whether seeking guidance with complex cases, ethical practice support, or managing professional challenges, this session helps us tailor our work to your unique needs.

For example, you might bring a challenging client case where you feel uncertain about the next steps. Together, we would explore the situation, review your interventions, and consider alternative approaches, drawing on case formulations or reflective practice techniques. This process allows you to deepen your understanding, develop confidence, and build effective strategies for similar challenges in the future.

By the end of the first session, we’ll have a clear supervision plan to support your growth as a therapist and ensure ethical and practical practice. Whether you’re looking to refine your therapeutic techniques, navigate professional dilemmas, or feel more supported in your role, I am here to guide you every step.
