About me and my therapy practice
I have been practising as Counsellor and Psychotherapist for over 30 years, and a supervisor for over 20 years.
I work with individuals , couples and families. My original training with Relate , working in various projects in the community . I subsequently qualified as a psychotherapist in Transactional Analysis MSc. and a diploma in supervision.
It is a normal Human desire to be happy and move towards growth and building good relationships. This path can often be blocked by negative recurring patterns that we would like to change, but become drawn into repeating them over and over again.
Wanting to change is an important beginning of the process. In order to explore past experiences and traumas that may be keeping you in the repetitive cycles that are not supportive of the changes you wish for in your life, I believe that it is essential to build a safe therapeutic relationship. The boundaries of the therapy sessions provide an opportunity to explore the past and how that may be influencing the present .
When we experience distress in our lives asking for help can be the most difficult thing we ever have to do. It can be a relief to know you are not alone and what you are feeling happens to many people in their lives.
I am interested in the how using mindfulness practice can support the therapy process of recovery . It gives the opportunity to be aware of our behaviours and explore unwanted thoughts and feelings from a different perspective of the here and now and not get trapped in past regrets and ruminations.
Once we become aware of our patterns often based on our past experiences we can begin to make different choices in the present .
Practice description
I have many different theoretical approaches that I integrate into my practice. We are all different even if it may seem that we want similar things. It will be important for us to work together to develop an approach that connects with you.
I will help you to understand how the echos from the past impact on self worth that continue to contaminate your thinking and capacity for change in the present. A mindfulness practice can help you to stay with uncomfortable feelings and understand that they are old outdated beliefs . Through this process you will be more able to be fully present and less fearful of what you "think" may happen.
Psychotherapy and Counselling is a contractual activity that takes place between the therapist and client . Meetings are private and confidential and so offers the opportunity for you to explore your concerns and fears in a safe setting.
When working on line I will be asking you to ensure you have a safe confidential space to attend the session . These are practicali issues that we will discuss at your introductory session .
My first session
I offer a free initial 30 min introductory session this usually takes place over the phone. This is an opportunity for me to establish your reason for contact and answer any questions you may have about the therapy I am able to offer.
If you decide to continue we will meet for an initial assessment session. I will ask you for more details about you and again this is an opportunity for you to ask questions . At the end of the first session we will decide together if you wish to go forward and book ongoing sessions. I usually invite clients to consider an initial 4 session contract , we would then assess where we are and how your needs are being met in the therapy session.
