About me and my therapy practice
Welcome! I am Sofia, a fully qualified Psychodynamic Counsellor & Psychotherapist (MA) working with adults and children. I am originally from Greece that lived also in Portugal for a while and I now live in the UK. Wherever I have lived, I have always experienced a profound commonality between people. The fact that none of us is immune to emotional pain. And that it is never easy to bear that pain alone. The traumatic experiences, the anxiety, the intense emotions or grief. Sharing the burden of these experiences can make a difference.
Should you wish to untangle the complexities of these difficulties and, through the sharing of your personal narrative, identify and reclaim precious aspects of yourself, I too am eager to provide you with a safe, non-judgemental, non-directive space and to embark upon this journey with you.
I understand that seeking counselling can bring feelings of anxiety or fear—but it also carries hope. By building a genuine and consistent relationship rooted in curiosity and presence, we can work together to bridge past, present, and future. Through this connection, we can heal past wounds and create the foundation for healthier, fulfilling relationships.
As a psychodynamic therapist, I work by helping you explore the unconscious processes that influence your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Through our conversations, I guide you in uncovering unresolved conflicts, past experiences, and repressed emotions that may be affecting your current struggles. My goal is to create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can express yourself freely, fostering self-awareness and insight into deeper, often hidden patterns. Together, we'll examine your relationships, defense mechanisms, and early life experiences to understand how they shape your present. By bringing unconscious material into conscious awareness, I aim to help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself, resolve inner conflicts, and move toward emotional growth and healing.
Practice description
The psychotherapeutic treatment I provide is grounded in a psychodynamic framework, with a particular focus on unconscious communication, as well as the dynamics of transference and countertransference that may arise within the therapeutic relationship. Through this process, clients can develop a deeper understanding of themselves and work towards personal growth. A primary objective in our journey is to identify self-limiting patterns, heal from past experiences, and gain insight into the ways the unconscious influences our behavior. In our work together with clients a basic aim is for them to achieve a sense of wholeness allowing them to re-establish a sense of unity, through self-discovery and self- reflection. Achieving a sense of wholeness enables individuals to live more authentically, align with their true selves, and cultivate healthier, more fulfilling relationships.
I work mainly relationally to help individuals and children explore the impact of their social relationships. I believe in providing a therapeutic relationship that models a healthy attachment, offering the opportunity for a corrective emotional experience and ultimately a secure base for my clients to explore the world.
I also work integratively with psychotherapeutic modalities. Working integratively with psychotherapeutic modalities means that, together, we will explore and draw from different therapeutic approaches to create a treatment plan that truly fits you. I believe in meeting you where you are, so we can blend techniques from various schools of therapy—whether it’s psychodynamic, trauma-focused, or relational therapy—in a way that resonates with your unique experiences and challenges.
