About me and my therapy practice
My name is Matthew and I am a therapist working online and in-person in Walthamstow and Dalston.
I provide a supportive, non-judgemental and confidential space where you can take time to reflect on your patterns of relating to yourself and others. The therapeutic process allows you to gain insight into how these patterns developed and explore new avenues for self-acceptance and meaningful change.
Therapy can help to address a specific problem or to cultivate greater self-awareness. Working collaboratively, and at a pace which suits you, we can explore and make sense of whatever it is that you are going through.
Therapy does not exclusively deal with problems and suffering. I see therapy as directed towards achieving a holistic well-being, going beyond symptom relief to foster personal growth, openness and self-expression.
Practice description
My approach to therapy is psychodynamic. This means I work in a way which seeks to explore how present feelings and behaviours are shaped by past relationships and experiences. A central idea is that self-knowledge reduces inner conflict, making way for a sense of acceptance and the potential for change.
Each session is open and non-directive - the invitation is to talk freely without censoring yourself. By paying careful attention to the thoughts, feelings and images which emerge during the course of treatment, new choices and states of mind can begin to open up.
My first session
Seeking therapy can feel like a daunting step into the unknown. I treat the first few sessions as an extended consultation so that you can decide whether we are a good fit and if it would be helpful to continue working together.
