About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I'm Nicola and I am an Integrative Therapeutic Counsellor. This is a blended approach to psychotherapy combining different elements of specific therapies and theories such as psychodynamic, person-centred and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

My blended way of working tailors an approach to sensitively respond to every single client I work with in a way that is as unique as they are.

The complexities of our whole life experience can evoke a range of emotions, thoughts and behaviours that we may not always understand, recognise or like about ourselves. My personal and professional experience, along with the research, shows that self-awareness, change and personal growth can flourish in the safe container of compassion, empathy and acceptance. Therapeutic Counselling work provides that very container and can facilitate a deeper, richer understanding and acceptance of ourselves.

As well as private practice, I have worked within the charity sector providing counselling (long and short term) for adults aged 18 - 70+.  I am experienced in supporting people with a wide range of concerns including, but not limited to:

abuse, ageing, anger management, anxiety, body image, confidence, depression, disability, eating disorders, existential crisis, grief, disordered eating, family, health, high sensitivity, intrusive thoughts, life transitions, loneliness & isolation, neurodiversity, overwhelm, parenthood, purpose and meaning, relationships, religion, self-expression, self-harm, self-worth, shame, sexual abuse, spirituality, work and career...

One of these concerns may resonate with you. Maybe you have different concerns. Maybe you have multiple concerns. Whatever it is that you need to bring, we can work together safely, compassionately, curiously, sensitively and at your pace to facilitate an understanding of what it means to you.

Practice description

Difficult thoughts and feelings are natural, yet somehow can be incredibly painful and challenging to express in our day to day lives, to those closest to us. Therapeutic Counselling can support you in exploring these aspects more deeply.

Therapeutic Counselling falls under the umbrella of Psychotherapy...But what is it?

'psycho-' relates to the mind

'therapy' originates from the Greek therapeia, meaning  ‘healing

Psychotherapy then literally means mind healing or healing the mind

This can sound abstract or bit 'out there' but in practice we can break it down and facilitate healing through exploration in areas such as:

  • emotions and emotional regulation
  • processing painful life experiences
  • self-compassion
  • self-acceptance
  • self-expression
  • Acknowledging, allowing & accepting
  • mindfulness & meditation
  • integrating all aspects or parts of the self into a whole self

In my practice I enjoy, find great value and have seen clients achieve healing and deeper self-awareness when working holistically and creatively.

Working holistically looks at the whole picture and how aspects such as physical health, diet, sleep and/or alcohol consumption interconnect and interdepend on one another and the effects they may be having on emotions, mood and motivation, etc. In wider life it may entail exploring relationships, work, hobbies, values, etc. and what they mean to you, how they're related, the impact they have and how they may relate to your concerns. Creatively, I'll encourage reflection between sessions through mediums like jouranlling, drawing or poetry, or I might offer some suggest reading or listening via articles, books or podcasts. We might also work with:

  • therapy cards
  • worksheets
  • emotional first aid box compilation
  • dice roll prompts
  • letter writing...and more

Fundamentally, I will create a confidential, safe, compassionate, empathic and empowering environment that supports you in gaining the tools needed to nurture your emotional and mental health throughout our work and long after it ends.

My first session

Accessing counselling can be a difficult step and I acknowledge the courage it takes in getting to this point. I offer the opportunity of a  complimentary 15-minute session to see if I am the right person for you. If so, our first 60 minute session will allow for a deeper expansion and exploration of your concerns.

Prior to the first session I will email you:

  • an assessment form
  • some health and wellbeing monitoring forms
  • our working agreement
These will need to be returned by email at least 24 hours before the first session. Questions and prompts on the forms can help you to both think about more deeply and formulate answers in your own time. These forms can (but not always) form the framework of the first session, facilitate expansion on your concerns, support the setting of goals and expectations of the work and may stimulate further questions you have about how the work will progress, which we can address.

Clients often ask how many sessions they might need and the answer to this is, in my experience, always subjective. My initial suggestion is weekly sessions for 6 weeks, at which point we can review the work. Some clients have all they need from the process by this point, some a little earlier and many have worked with me longer, some  for 2+ years.
