About me and my therapy practice

Hi, thanks for taking the time to pop on my page and for having a look. The chances are if you are here right now on this site you’re looking for a bit of support, either for you or maybe to help find support for a loved one. We all go through various hard times or struggles in our life whether you’re feeling anxious, depressed, experienced trauma or sometimes not even sure why you’re looking for a counsellor but just know you need an outside perspective, I’m happy to help!

So, let me tell you a bit about me.

My name is Yvonne and I’m a person centred counsellor. For anyone looking through these pages feeling a bit confused by all the different modalities let me put that in simple terms; It means I work with where you are at, what you bring and help you navigate your way through it. Less sat nav more old school road map. I’m not going to tell you how to get there, but I’ll help lay the roads out in a way that makes sense and then you can follow your path.

Although, I am person centred in training, I am also very much the pragmatist and happy to look at solution focused approaches and practical action, I’ve even been known to hand out a bit of homework every now and again! I’m all about meeting you where you are at and working in partnership to meet your needs on your journey and love the process of finding what works for you and how we integrate this into our work together.

Practice description

I’ve been a qualified therapist since 2009 and during this time have I  worked in various roles providing counselling and various supports. Ive been fortunate enough to have a vast varied and amazing career supporting adults and young people in youth work, education, prison settings, and also those that have experienced childhood abuse and trauma. My passion in life is people, simple as that. I get to go to work each day and be with people as they grow and change and find their way and it’s humbling and a true gift.

My counselling space comes with no judgement and is a space where you are free to come as you are and who you are. Sometimes we need to cry, shout, curse it out and yes even laughing is allowed in therapy!

The norm in our sessions would be 50 minutes and often we meet weekly or fortnightly if that is more suitable for the work, but we would figure this out together, to make sure the frequency works best for you.

My first session

First session nerves are a total normal thing, and that’s ok! What do I say to this person? how much do I tell them? Where do I even begin! Let’s make it a little easier.

This session is a chance to get started and figure out your pace. We will start with me welcoming you in the room and offering the space for you to get comfortable. I use a couple of different therapy rooms around Kirkintilloch, lenzie and Cumbernauld, so we can agree which one suits you best.

The time is then yours to use how you need. Normally I will start off by asking what brings you to therapy just to give us a bit of a steer of where we are going. If you are goal oriented we can use the first session to set these, but again this is your choice.

This only really gives a snippet on how work with me might be and that is why I think an initial conversation of 15 minutes before picking your therapist is so important and why I offer this for free, with no obligation. If you are thinking of counselling please feel free to make contact.
