About me and my therapy practice

Hi, my name is Jemima and a qualified integrative counsellor. I provide a customised approach so you feel safe and heard; so you can understand yourself and the world around you. My specialist area is women's issues, identity and relationships, however all are welcome.

Do you struggle with low self-esteem, anxiety, insecurity, feeling overwhelmed or a challenging relationship? Are you finding it difficult being a new mum, going through the menopause, recovering from abuse or moving past trauma? Have you lost your sense of self? Perhaps you find yourself always putting others first, never saying ‘no’ and feeling like your opinions/desires are not important? Do any of these struggles affect your daily life, relationships and enjoyment, and you wonder if life is always going to feel this hard? But it is possible to live your life in a happier, more positive way. Life won’t always feel this hard.

Although it might sometimes feel impossible, it’s never too late to change how you feel about yourself and how you respond to situations and people; it demonstrates strength and courage to start that journey and seek support. My aim to help you find your inner empowerment, strength and resilience.

I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, and abide by their code of ethics. I work with young people and adults, in both face-to-face and online sessions. I am based in both York and Pickering, North Yorkshire.

Practice description

Although my focus is women's mental health, relationship issues and couple counselling, all are welcome.

Person-centred is a proven talking therapy which offers sustained and in-depth understanding of self. I have also trained in somatic-informed therapy to incorporate a whole-body approach so you can feel like a whole person again. You will receive compassion and understanding from me, so you can develop self-compassion, self-belief and a strong sense of worth. This enables a reframing of your self.

A somatic approach can build awareness of sensations and feelings in your body, and how they connect to your emotions and experiences. It creates sense of safety and enables you to regulate your emotions when feeling overwhelmed or numb. Most of my clients see a change in their responses after a few sessions, then a sustained improvement.

I also have training in Acceptence and Commitment Therapy (ACT) which looks at ways to change your responses to unwanted, intrusive or recurring negative thoughts and feelings. It helps you to resist getting all tangled up in those negative thoughts and acting on them, and instead can help create a sense of control, mindfulness and inner peace.

An integrative approach means I am able to adapt to meet the needs of each and every unique person and their experiences.

My first session

The first session can feel daunting, overwhelming or a relief to finally have a safe space to voice your concerns and difficulties. The 50 minute session can feel like it goes in the blink of an eye, once you start opening up.

I ask for new clients to complete an initial assessment form, which helps me ascertain your expectations and goals from counselling, as well as any support you might have.

It also helps me gauge how you are feeling emotionally and if you have any behaviours or physical symptoms, which gives me an insight into your whole body responses; a whole body approach to your issues and struggles.

We can also discuss what kind of therapies interest you, which again offers a guide as to how I can adapt to meet your needs.
