About me and my therapy practice
I am trained as a person centred counsellor and I offer a non judgemental space for a client to be fully heard and respected. I have worked with both adults and children and sessions run for 50 minutes. I offer an initial one to one or phone consultation to see if you would like to work with me. I am very community based and work from a very quiet and private purpose built therapy room in my home town of Witham. In my work the sessions are led by you and I listen very carefully to what you say and reflect back to you what I hear and regularly check that my understanding of what your are saying is what you mean. In that relationship some amazing healing and change can take place. Confidentiality is key, as is a good working relationship bound in mutual respect.
Practice description
I have worked with young people for coming up to 30 years and decided to train as a counsellor specialising in children and young people. I consequently have counselled many children and young people as well as adults. I have worked both in schools and private practice and also run group therapy workshops. I now work mainly 1 - 1 but do at times run various groups for my community.
I also work on the phone, online and via email. I understand that for some clients working face to face is not what works best for them and would like to reassure you that other methods can also be incredibly beneficial.
With me, you will find a very open and empathic counsellor who has a genuine interest in her clients and their journey in making sense of the issues that have brought them to counselling. I myself was incredibly lucky to come across a person centred counsellor when I was at a crossroads in my life at 18. I can testify first hand what a life changing experience that was for me and have been committed to helping others since then.
In the counselling rooms over the years all life topics have appeared in one form or another and every client is different. If you feel there is something which you want to work on then I feel positive that we can work on it together.
My first session
I will start with doing either an in person assessment or a phone assessment. In the first session we will agree a contract and a way of working which will cover issues around safe working practices and confidentiality. We will also discuss times of meetings and payment terms. We will discuss safeguarding, as my aim is always to keep my client safe and consequently that needs to be discussed in the first meeting. I offer 10 initial sessions with the possibility of extending onto more sessions. If you are getting in touch for your child or young person then I will do an in person or phone consultation with you first as the parent/guardian but when I meet the client I will also be asking them why they are coming to counselling and what they would like to achieve from it. It is very important that the client has ownership of the sessions.
Often, the issues that are discussed in the assessment change as the counselling progresses and this is absolutely fine. The important thing is that the client feels that the relationship with the counsellor will be a positive therapeutic one.
