About me and my therapy practice
Hi, my name is Mia Von Scha, and my passion is helping families to thrive. My practice is based on the latest research on attachment, trauma, child development and evidence based parenting. I am a child therapist, parenting coach, EMDR and trauma therapist, and I specialise in working with parents and their infants/toddlers. I believe that it is never too early or too late to recover from childhood trauma!
I offer a variety of services, both online and in-person. I offer talking therapy, life coaching, trauma counselling and EMDR for all ages. I also offer play-based therapy for children and adolescents. For very young children and infants, I work through the parents to treat behavioural issues and trauma.
I use a lot of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). This is primarily a trauma treatment but can be used for anxiety, nightmares, bedwetting, phobias and many other issues. EMDR is effective with all ages and doesn't require you talking about your trauma (which is why it can be used with babies, non-verbal populations and those who would rather not rehash their worst moments!)
My training includes an undergraduate degree in Psychology and a Masters in Psychotherapy for Children, Adolescents and Families. I am currently undergoing additional training in Advanced Infant Mental Health and Wellbeing. I also have my level three qualification in EMDR and wrote my Masters research dissertation on EMDR for infants and toddlers with trauma.
Practice description
The main issue I treat is trauma, regardless of age. I work mostly with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing). For younger children I work through the parents. I also offer parenting coaching and assistance with behavioural issues in children and teens. If you're looking for help with behaviour, you've come to the right place!
With adults I work predominantly online and I combine approaches from therapy and life coaching depending on what your needs and goals are. This could be a space for you to come and offload and be heard, or could be more directive, where we tackle some of your current challenges and find solutions and work towards specific goals. In our first few sessions I'll get to know you and we can decide together what approach would work best for you at this time.
With teenagers, it will depend on both their chronological and emotional age what approach we take. I may meet with you, the parent, first and get some history or I may see the two of you together. We can then decide if they are more suited to talk therapy or play-based approaches. Depending on the age of the young person will determine how much the parents are involved in the therapy.
With children, I will always meet with the parent/s first and get a full history and understanding of the current issues. I will then incorporate both play therapy with the child and regular sessions with the parent/s in order to get the best outcome for the whole family.
With babies and toddlers, the work will be primarily with the parent/s. I will help you to help your child by guiding and training you in certain therapeutic techniques that you can implement at home. This may be mostly online, or I may meet you and the child or do a home visit if necessary.
If you're looking for parenting support, this could be ongoing or even one-off sessions to tackle a specific issue. We can meet online or on the phone and work together to decipher your child's behaviour and how to bring things back into balance.
My first session
I offer an initial 15-20 minute free consultation so that we can meet and make sure that we are the right fit for each other. This is an opportunity for me to get an understanding of what you are looking for and a chance for you to ask me any questions you have about my approach.
Following this meeting, if we decide to continue, we will work out a suitable time and I will email you some forms to complete before we begin.
