About me and my therapy practice
I’m James, an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist. I believe the challenge we all face in life is to stop fighting against ourselves and instead begin the process of learning to live with ourselves. Our first step is to get to know ourselves better, by exploring our thoughts, feelings and experiences with the help of a guide. Somebody who has done this work themselves and understands the process. Somebody who can offer warmth, understanding and empathy. This is where I come in.
We hear many stories in our lives. Stories about who we are, who we’re supposed to be, who we can be. Often these stories take root and influence our lives in ways we can’t immediately identify. In our sessions together, we can examine this narrative and begin to author a different story.
Our relationships also may offer some insight into our present difficulties, whether these are with our family, our friends or perhaps our relationship to things like work or our community. Central to all our relationships is the one we have with ourselves. Who we were, who we are and who we want to be. Together we can explore these relationships and make sense of how these impact us.
Ultimately the way we work together is unique. It’s something we create together based on what’s important to you.
Practice description
I have an MSc in Therapeutic Counselling from the University of Greenwich and am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP). Over the past decade I’ve worked in various roles supporting people with their mental health and wellbeing, including several posts at world-leading universities. I’ve also worked as an LGBT Counsellor and welcome individuals from the community. My practice is LGBTQ+ affirmative. I’ve completed a wide range of trainings on mental health and now train staff and students within universities on supporting the psychological health of others.
I offer counselling and psychotherapy on both a short and longer-term basis based on your situation and needs. I currently offer a limited number of concessionary rates to trainee psychotherapists and counsellors.
My first session
If you feel that we would be a good fit, then please do get in touch. I offer an initial 20-minute phone call free-of-charge in which I can answer any questions and we can talk over what you're looking for.
If you would like to move forward after this, I will send you a contract to look over and agree to, and we’ll usually arrange sessions once a week. I’m happy to talk about a different arrangement if this would better suit your needs. Our first full session will focus on creating a joint understanding of how we'll move forward together.
