About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I'm Emily. I am a qualified Psychotherapist and founder of Talking and Creating based in Manchester.
Talking and Creating was designed as a way to connect traditional talking therapies and playful activities to people who may not want to take a linear approach to psychotherapy. My approach is flexible, affordable, inclusive, and fun.
"I am extremely passionate about individuality and encouraging people to understand themselves better. I believe that everyone has the ability to navigate their own journey, and that my role as psychotherapist/counsellor is to hold space and gently follow that journey with them. I am a passionate creative, and combine traditional therapeutic techniques with playful activities that allow clients to open up and reconnect with themselves in a truly authentic way. I believe that EVERYONE should be able to access and experience therapy."
Training, qualifications & experience
Over the past decade, I have been on a journey of my own self-discovery and learning which have led me to specialising in counselling and psychotherapy.
MSc in Counselling and Psychotherapy with Creative Approaches
This comprehensive program focused on developing and applying person-centred techniques in therapy alongside playful activities such as art, drama, music, movement, and poetry. As a result, I have acquired a diverse and well-rounded understanding of counselling, making this Masters degree an informative and integrative foundation for my practice.
BSc (Hons) in Drama
During this degree, I was exposed to theatre in prison practice, drama therapy, theatre in education, theatre in action, and performance art. I developed a comprehensive understanding of how to combine drama with well-being through experiences of delivering drama workshops in prisons.

Practice description
My approach is all about you—your experiences, feelings, and journey. Together, we'll create a safe and nurturing space where you can explore and understand yourself better.
A Personal Approach
At the heart of my practice is the belief that every person is unique and deserving of empathy and respect. I tailor my therapeutic approach to meet your specific needs, incorporating various creative techniques. I also know that the therapy process isn't always linear. Life gets in the way sometimes, and I am here to make sure that you can access therapy as and when you need it.
A Safe and Supportive Space
No matter how we meet, my goal is to create a space where you feel truly seen and heard. Together, we'll explore your thoughts and feelings at your own pace, without judgment. My role is to support you in finding your own answers and developing the tools you need to navigate life's challenges.
A Creative Touch
Whether through art, music, movement, or storytelling, we'll find the best ways for you to express and understand your feelings. This creative process can help unlock insights and emotions that words alone might not fully capture.
In sessions, we might use creative tools such as doodling, movement, art, writing, drama, and music, or we may just talk. Together we will decide on an approach that feels safe and comfortable for the pace of our work.
My first session
The first therapy session often sets the foundation for the therapeutic relationship and establishes the groundwork for future sessions.
Our goal is to create a collaborative relationship together in therapy. Essentially, this session is all about me getting to know you - not a diagnosis, a label, or who you feel you should be.
I like to be transparent, so here's what you can typically expect...
Therapist Introduction
I will introduce myself, share my background, and explain my approach to therapy.
Client Introduction
You’ll have the opportunity to introduce yourself and share a bit about your background and why you’re seeking therapy.
Confidentiality Explanation
I will explain the limits of confidentiality, including circumstances under which I might need to break confidentiality.
Expectations
I will clarify what you can expect from the therapy process and what I expect from you in terms of participation and effort.
Healthcare Questionnaire
I combine using the GAD-7 questionnaire alongside a general discussion about presenting issues that you are experiencing.
Setting Therapeutic Goals
We will discuss what you hope to achieve in therapy, both short-term and long-term goals.
Session Structure & Scheduling
Information on how our sessions will typically be structured, duration, frequency, and any logistical details like cancellation policies or making contact between sessions.
