About me and my therapy practice
Greetings! I'm Jenny, and I am a registered member of BACP, and I graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a PGDip in Counselling in 2023.
Forget the stereotype of the all-knowing therapist, sitting silently and assessing your situation with their perfect wisdom. I am not here to tell you what's wrong, or what to do to fix it. I believe you have the answers inside you. My job is to work beside you collaboratively, draw out this innate wisdom, and help you find a way of being that feels right for you.
I believe more people than not have experienced painful things in their lives that have left a lasting mark. Often these experiences lead us to develop maladaptive ways of coping. Although these defences are ways that our mind tries to keep us safe, they ultimately lead to further suffering.
I am trained in psychodynamic and person-centred theory. I use psychodynamic theory to understand your past, and person-centred theory work with you and find a way through it.
Psychodynamic theory understands that our past relationships (in particular, the relationship with our primary caregiver/s) has formed the way we relate to others in the present. We have a complex inner world that shapes our experiencing of reality.
The heart of person-centred theory is that the quality of our working relationship will determine the effectiveness of therapy. That's why I'm fiercely committed to providing you warmth, empathy and a lack of judgement, so you can explore your story in a safe way.
I also have significant experience working with adults in Higher Education, and I offer concessionary rates for students.
Practice description
Generally, I offer long-term, open ended therapy. I meet you where you're at in the present moment, and we go at your pace. We will have regular reviews (once a season) to check in, see how you're finding the work, and see if we need to alter our course.
I offer short-term therapy, which can be helpful to tackle a specific problem.
I also offer fortnightly sessions. I always recommend starting with weekly therapy to begin with, as we will have a solid understanding of each other first before seeing each other less frequently.
My first session
In our first session, we go over the therapeutic agreement. I'll talk a little about myself and how I practice. It's an opportunity for you to ask any questions about me, my way of working, or how the process works. I'll then ask what brings you to therapy, and we dive into the work.
I offer a discounted rate of £40 for the first session, so you can see if it's right for you.
