About me and my therapy practice
My name is Shahanaj (pronounced SHA-NAZ), and I am a qualified Integrative Relational Counsellor and Psychotherapist. I am dedicated to providing a warm, supportive, and non-judgmental space for you to explore what brings you to therapy. My practice is person-centred, incorporating a range of therapeutic modalities to help facilitate meaningful and lasting change.
I have had the privilege of working with diverse communities, including individuals from the Global Majority, for most of my professional career. This has informed my culturally attuned approach and is something that continues to shape my practice. I am also mindful that our internal realities and external experiences are influenced by contextual factors, including the systems within which we are situated (family, community, political and global).
I have worked with people seeking asylum, refugees, and clients facing multiple and complex challenges such as sexual violence, self-harm, and anxiety. Additionally, I have supported individuals experiencing domestic abuse, racism, and systemic injustice.
My practice is trauma-informed, with a sensitivity to the unique needs of each client.
Practice description
I believe that a strong therapeutic relationship is key to achieving positive outcomes for clients. By fostering a safe, trusting space, rooted in unconditional acceptance, we can work collaboratively to create an environment that encourages personal growth. This may involve exploring the connections between past experiences and present challenges, including how attachment-based wounds may continue to affect us.
My first session
Your first session with me will be an opportunity to discuss what brings you to therapy and what you might hope to gain from the sessions. It will also provide an opportunity to see whether or not we would be a good fit.
It is important within my practice that clients feel able to share their thoughts, feelings and experiences without fear of judgement. A collaborative space where empathy is offered and self-compassion is encouraged.
If you feel that you would like us to work together, please get in touch.
I am bilingual and offer therapy in both English and Bengali, including Bangla grammar and the Sylheti dialect.
Sessions are offered face to face, online and over the phone. I also offer a free 20-minute initial consultation.
