About me and my therapy practice
Welcome! Reaching out for support in a time of difficulty or to address issues from the past can feel challenging and unsafe and you have now taken the first step. For all of us, life is multi-faceted with many ups and downs. The process of therapy can be transformative in helping you weather past and present storms, to feel safer and more connected with yourself and others, and simply to live a more meaningful life with greater satisfaction.
I am a BACP registered, experienced Counsellor and Business Psychologist with an additional 15-year background working in other helping professions as an NHS Midwife and mentor including for the Prince's Trust. As a therapist, I work in a ‘humanistic-integrative’ manner which means I am trained in multiple ways of working that can be matched to your individual needs. I strongly believe in working with the whole person. This means that we take into account all of you: your past, your present, and your future, your conscious awareness and your unconscious self.
Due to my background experience, I feel I have seen life from many different angles and can deeply empathise with the complexities and struggles individuals can face. I have a special interest in trauma/PTSD, anxiety, and pregnancy-related difficulties but have also worked extensively with clients on the Autism spectrum, clients with ADHD, and individuals suffering with grief and/or depression (this list is not exhaustive and please do contact me if you have any specific queries).
My interest in trauma/PTSD originated during my trauma-informed training and through working extensively with affected clients in placement and private practice. My passion for helping women and families struggling with perinatal issues (conception, miscarriage, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and abortion) grew out of my Midwifery work. Through this, I have developed deep insight and compassion regarding the joys and challenges as well as the trauma that can be associated with the perinatal period.
Practice description
I work one-to-one with adults (18+) including vulnerable adults (current clear DBS check). I offer face-to-face, online, and walk-and-talk sessions. I have some limited availability for home visits. My practice is based in Central Bath with free parking nearby and easy links to public transport. Sessions are generally weekly and last for 50 minutes each. If twice-weekly sessions are requested, I will always try to accommodate this. I work both on a short-term as well as on a long-term, open-ended basis depending on your specific requirements.
My approach to therapy is 'humanistic-integrative', which means it is client-centred and that I am trained in multiple ways of working including psychodynamic, person-centred, trauma-informed, attachment-theory informed, Gestalt, and the use of "parts-work" such as Internal Family Systems. I also work creatively where appropriate and desired using drawings, objects, or dream-work. Together we find the best way for you to help address and overcome the difficulties you are bringing and to achieve healing, change, and/or greater resilience in life.
My personal style is warm, empathic, compassionate, and non-judgmental. I firmly believe in equality, diversity, and that everyone has a right to be heard and helped. I see my ability to create a safe and holding space for my clients in which you can open up freely without fear as being one of my core strengths.
My first session
I offer a free initial 15-minute phone consultation which is a good opportunity for us to get a better sense of each other, for me to understand your therapy need in more detail, and for you to ask me any questions you may have.
During our first 50-minute session, I tend to go through a background information questionnaire which enables me to develop a more thorough, holistic understanding of who you are, your background history, and your goals and hopes for therapy. However, completing this information form in its entirety during the first session is neither necessary, nor always possible depending on what you bring and would prefer to spend time on. Often, my clients and I complete this across two to three sessions.
