About me and my therapy practice

Qualifications and Training

My counselling qualification comes from graduating from a BSc (Hons) Humanistic Counselling degree at the Metanoia Institute in London. The combination of studying at this well-regarded training facility and choosing a BACP recognised course, ensures I am thoroughly trained to the highest standard. I am continually adding to my journey of knowledge and experience though regular CPD’s and group work. The three modalities that make up the Humanistic training are Person Centred (PC), Transactional Analysis (TA) and Gestalt. However, I also have experience in using the tools of CBT where appropriate.

The BACP’s Ethical Framework and guidelines underpin my work thus ensuring your well-being is first and foremost throughout our sessions.

My Lived Experience

My therapeutic qualification enables me to counsel clients, but the degree part of my qualification was for me. Setting my training aside, I am me - a human being with feelings and emotions. I have a wealth of personal experience which enhances my professional world - the last 21 years within health and social care. I have supported many people going through the hardest times of their life including loneliness; depression and/or anxiety; loss through bereavement, divorce or a relationship breakdown; cognition and/or mobility decline; active addiction and recovery and the isolation of unpaid carers.

Practice description

My therapeutic philosophy

My background is in Humanistic Counselling meaning I work collaboratively with you, the client, being the expert on yourself - there is no hierarchy in my counselling room. The first sessions will centre around building the foundations of a trusting relationship in which you can feel safe whilst exploring your feelings and emotions and how you relate to the world around you. I aim to provide this secure environment using three key elements - empathy, non-judgmentalism and honesty. Initially, our sessions will be client led with you dictating the depth of feelings you wish to go to and the pace at which we travel.

As I get to know you, as a Humanistic practitioner, I will work as channel through which you can begin to take your first tentative steps towards self-awareness. I aim to assist you locate the tools that exist within you to facilitate change. I will walk hand in hand with you through each session and I will endeavour to help you to help yourself by communicating with you in everyday, unpretentious language.

Whether you want me as a witness who holds a space for you to feel heard and seen, help with practical and realistic goal setting or anything in between, I have the experience and flexibility to tailor make your sessions to your needs.

‘People, through self-awareness, are capable of choice and therefore responsible for their behaviour’. (Clarkson, 1999).
