About me and my therapy practice

'Out beyond ideas of wrong-doing and right-doing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass,

The world is too full to talk about.

Ideas, language, even the phrase each other

Doesn’t make any sense.'

(extract from Rumi’s ‘The Great Wagon’)

My name is Heather Rosser. I know counselling can feel daunting, unknown and scary. When I first saw a therapist, I wondered what to say, if I was saying the right thing, if I needed to see a therapist at all, what they thought of me, what did they expect or want me to say. Whatever brings you to counselling, we can explore together, there is nothing too small or too big, there is no right or wrong way, only your way. As your counsellor, I aim to be by your side, exploring what it must be like for you, from your perspective. I have a gentle manner demonstrating empathy, unconditional positive regard and congruence, enabling my clients to feel safe and comfortable exploring their feelings.

Before I was a counsellor, I was an outdoor education coach. Memories of being in nature, particularly around a campfires evoke feelings of warmth, comfort, connection and grounding. I aim to provide a space, where you can feel held in a similar way, enabling you to explore your feelings and emotions.

As well as offering sessions in nature, online and telephone, I am exploring options for the future to offer indoor counselling and I hope to one day be able to provide sessions around a fire. Frequency and amount of session depends on you, your needs and desires. I find my clients often start with weekly sessions. Some clients, but not all, feel after a while, fortnightly sessions suit them better. How many sessions you have is up to you. I also welcome you to contact me if you feel you need additional sessions.

Practice description

Online or telephone

In your own familiar and safe environment, we can explore what’s brought you to counselling together. Being in your own space may help you feel more at ease to talk on a more mutual level. Physical barriers, such as time and travel constraints are reduced. Bear in mind, during the session you will need a private space where you feel free to talk openly and uninterrupted, with signal and/or internet. These sessions will be 50 minutes long.

In-nature sessions

The focus of these sessions is you, and for our natural environment to enable you. Sometimes our environment may mirror situations or spark thoughts and feelings. This offers us opportunities to explore what comes up for yourself. There is no expectations to be able to walk a set distance or be super physically fit. We may walk alongside each other finding a pace which allows us to explore and feel connected to nature. We may also not walk much at all, if you decide you like a particular spot we can sit and be present there.

I have a number of locations I recommend or we can explore places special to you, within reasonable travel distance to Ashburton, Devon. We may encounter general public during our sessions, but should be opportunities to find secluded spots. If we bump into someone you know, particularly when we are somewhere special to you, you are under no obligation to introduce me or explain who I am.

These sessions will typically be between 1 hour 30 to 2 hours, so cost £75. Duration can be discussed. In-nature are weather permitting, online or telephone can be offered as an alternative.

Coming soon - Indoor and in-nature

I am currently exploring locations where I can offer both indoor and in-nature sessions. Being indoors can offer a feeling of safety, security and comfort. I am hoping to find a space soon, which offers the flexibility, based on your preferences and needs (and of course the weather!), to offer indoors or in-nature, potentially on a session-by-session bases if you desire.

My first session

Our first session together will be free. I recommend video call for our first meeting, but telephone can also be a option if you prefer. During the session we can discuss weather you would prefer video, telephone or stroll-in-nature going forward. We will need to discuss and agree on our therapeutic contract.

Beyond this, the session aim is to help discover if I am the right therapist for you. It can be used to explore what your expectations of therapy are, any aims you would like to work toward and/or areas you feel would be beneficial to explore within a therapeutic relationship. However the is no expectations to talk about anything specific, its more of a exploration to see if you feel we could be the right fit together.

I look forward to hearing from you via email, phone or contact forms.
