About me and my therapy practice
There are many reasons why people come for counselling. Often it's because they are struggling to resolve something in their life, their relationships or themselves. Perhaps they are feeling stuck, weighed-down, confused, anxious or depressed. It could be something current or something from the past that is disrupting their quality of everyday life, causing emotional or psychological turmoil.
Whatever the reason, I see counselling as an opportunity to explore this in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental relationship. Through exploration, self-understanding and awareness, we can increase our capacity to be in healthy relationship with ourselves and with other people. This broadens our perception of ourselves and our available choices, increasing our ability to respond in our lives in healthy flexible ways.
Practice description
As a therapist I use an Integrative-Gestalt approach. This means I am guided by the principles of awareness, authenticity, creativity and balance. My approach is underpinned by the Humanistic view that we all have the capacity to grow and to be in healthy relationship with ourselves and others, and can make positive choices in our lives. Sometimes however, our patterns of thinking, behaviour, internal beliefs or traumatic experiences can disrupt this balance.
I offer my clients a collaborative therapeutic relationship that is warm, non-judgemental and empathic. The focus is on greater emotional/psychological balance through increased awareness, self-knowledge and authenticity. This promotes a healthy relationship with ourselves, with other people and the world around us, allowing us to live more resourcefully.
My first session
Initially, we would have a 15 minute telephone conversation (free) so that I can get an understanding of your reasons for seeking counselling and what you hope to gain from it. If appropriate, we would schedule your first appointment.
In the first session, we will discuss in greater depth your reasons for seeking help and take a history. This helps us both get a broader picture of the difficulties you are experiencing and helps frame our work together. This is also an opportunity for you to ask me any questions you may have about counselling itself or how I work. In the first session we can mutually agree if we are going to work together, and if so agree appointment times and contract for six sessions, with the option to contract for further sessions as needed. I offer both short and long term therapy.
