About me and my therapy practice

James McCarthy is a registered member of the BACP and is qualified Counsellor. His training also included: working with Bereavement, CBT, Eating Disorders, Neuroscience & Attachments, and Suicide. James works with clients, who want to see him for either short-term or open-ended therapy. James also has experience of working short term within the NHS Talking Therapies Service.

James provides a safe and holding space for his clients to explore their issues by sharing their personal thoughts and feelings within a confidential space. James believes it’s important for the client and therapist to co-create the therapeutic relationship, as he feels the relationship is important to establish, so the therapy experience can be meaningful and impactful upon a client’s life.

James uses various models within his approach as an Integrative Counsellor. These include Person Centred, whereby the therapist builds a rapport by listening to and empathising with the clients’ issues during the sessions. He draws upon the Gestalt approach which works very much in the here and now, to explore a healthy relationship with the self and environment. James also explores early childhood attachments and how they impact upon adult relationships which is known as the psychodynamic approach to therapy.

James was originally interested in acting but moved into producing short films and comedy after training. Although he enjoyed working in the industry, he understands that it can also be a demanding and stressful environment. During this time, he went into personal therapy and became interested in men’s mental health and then decided to train as a therapist. James is interested in working with anxiety, binge and compulsive eating, depression, relationships, stress, trauma including survivors of sexual abuse. He works with the LGBTQ+ community.
