What to expect
My role is not to fix anything. Instead I like to describe how I walk alongside my clients providing them with support to take the next steps forward in their life story.
You can expect me to provide encouragement, gentle challenge and appropriate humour. My aim is to help you gain greater clarity about what is causing you problems or keeping you stuck and how you can do things differently moving forwards.
Practical & holistic
I believe improvements to mental health don't simply happen by talking about your thoughts and feelings. The connection between your mind, your body and your lifestyle are all interwoven so my approach to counselling is based on a holistic way of looking at wellbeing.
As we will only spend one hour per week or fortnight together, we may also discuss initiatives you can try out between our sessions. This might be to make a small change to how you are approaching a particular situation, try out a mindful activity e.g. going for a walk in nature or do something which helps you take better care of yourself.
It will be about finding things you feel comfortable and happy to try, which are practical and realistic, celebrating when things go well and being kind to your self if something doesn't work out.

I am trained in a variety of counselling techniques so will tailor my approach to your needs. For eating disorders I use a model developed by the National Centre for Eating Disorders.
I often make use of creative Gestalt therapy techniques such as sketching, visualisation, playing roles and working with the body. If this is something you are open to experiencing, they can be valuable to help you gain a better understanding of yourself and how your mind and body work together.

I offer an initial free of charge telephone call so we can have a chat about why you are seeking counselling at the moment and what you would like to achieve.
This also allows us to talk about whether you have had counselling before, how my counselling sessions work and for you to ask me any questions.
Starting to work together
If after our initial call, we decide to work together, the next step will be to book an appointment.
We will arrange a regular time to meet either weekly or fortnightly.
Timeframe for working together
I can work with you on a short term basis for a limited number of sessions or on an open ended basis depending on your requirements. I usually recommend a minimum of six appointments for short term work.
