About me and my therapy practice

Thank you for wanting to read more about me and my approach to my work. I am a qualified Therapist, working  with clients aged 15 years upwards. I offer both short or long-term one to one counselling depending on the individual needs of clients and I am able to offer face-to-face or online sessions where appropriate.

I am a based in Leeds City Centre and the Ilkley area. I offer face to face sessions and online sessions, if required. I offer both short or long-term one to one counselling depending on the individual needs of the client.

I have worked for the NHS for many years and continue to do so in a patient-facing role. My work has helped to inform my practice as a counsellor. I work with genuine care, compassion, warmth and sensitivity.

My career to date has provided me with a wealth of knowledge and understanding of the difficulties endured by others. Such difficulties may be linked to physical/medical conditions, or to the 'harm caused by others', such as abuse, assault and violence. These difficulties can often leave us feeling low, depressed, anxious, with self-doubt and lacking in confidence. We often lose sight of who we really are, what really matters to us, and the person we strive to be.

It can be extremely stressful, exhausting and scary carrying such difficult emotions around as we try to manage our daily lives. We can feel alone, isolated with our thoughts or overwhelmed by our worries and concerns. It can be daunting asking for help, but there is always help available, and the right support at the right time can make a massive difference to an individual's sense of emotional well-being and how they choose to live their lives.

Practice description

As a person-centred counsellor I aim to support clients to recognise their own strengths and resources, so that they may work through issues and find solutions to their problems in a way that is right for them. I provide a safe and confidential environment, which enables clients to feel heard, accepted and understood. With clients we work together to explore thoughts and feelings. I work with competence, confidence, empathy, without judgement and always have my client’s best interest at heart of the therapeutic relationship.

I work from a humanistic approach that puts the client at the centre of the therapeutic relationship. Taking on the client’s perspective and seeing things as they do helps to facilitate personal growth and enables clients to make life choices that are right for them. To embrace the uniqueness of individuals I work in a flexible manner with an aim of interacting in a way that best suits the needs of the individual, after all, ‘one size does not fit all’.

Key areas I have worked in include:

• Anxiety

• Stress

• Low self-esteem

• Self-harm

• Depression

• Bereavement, loss and isolation

• Relationship issues

• Sexuality

• Trauma

• Physical or emotional abuse, including sexual assault

• HIV

• Cultural differences, including stigma, fear and prejudice

• Chronic illness

• Work-related issues

Client testimonies

Susan provided me with a safe and peaceful environment where I could express my emotions and feel heard, perhaps for the first time in my life.

Her gentle support and the questions she directed me to when I felt overwhelmed, helped to ground me and stop my emotions escalating.

The counselling I received has been completely life changing for me with my anxiety and feelings of grief.

Susan’s support allowed me to be honest with myself, to move towards seeing there is a different life for me, within my reach.
