About me and my therapy practice
I am an integrative counsellor/psychotherapist working with children, young people and their families.
I am passionate about supporting children and young people through challenging life experiences. I take a systemic and attachment theory informed approach to play therapy for younger children and talking therapy with young people/adolescents. Many young people find using creative materials helpful, as part of talking therapy and these are available to be used within our sessions.
My priority is to be child centred, determining an approach for each child based on their needs. Being integrative means I might draw on a psychodynamic approach and/or use cognitive approaches such as CBT.
Whilst I currently work within the school setting, my Masters' dissertation found that an in-nature setting provides the space for therapeutic encounters for primary aged children, which fuels my interest in developing nature-based therapy for children and young people.
Practice description
I offer face to face counselling due to the creative nature of my work with children and young people. In a therapy session you can expect to experience me as playful, accepting, curious, non-judgemental and having empathy.
I believe every child or young person has the innate ability to overcome their challenges and experiences, when they are provided with the right support and space. This is what I aim to provide in the therapeutic space of a therapy session.
As a Registered Member of the BACP, I work to BACP professional standards and ethical framework. I aim at all times to be respectful, valuing equality, diversity and inclusion. My work is supervised by a qualified supervisor who I meet regularly, receiving at least the frequency of supervision required by the BACP.
My first session
After an initial phone call and before commencing therapy with a child or young person, I hold an assessment session with parent(s)/carer(s). The purpose of this session is to help parent(s)/carer(s) understand what therapy is and how they can support it, to give consent for the therapy, and for me to ask questions to help create a background understanding of the child. This session usually lasts an hour and the cost is my standard hourly fee.
When an adolescent or young person is to receive therapy, the first session includes assessment, as well as an opportunity for the young person to decide whether they want to work with me. This session costs my standard hourly fee.
