About me and my therapy practice
I have been an Integrative therapist for over 15 years and have experience working as a therapist within the NHS, GP surgeries third sector organisations, addictions services, charities and private practice. I have also offered group support to families struggling to cope with their child's chronic health conditions.
Prior to this, I was an NHS nurse for over 15 years, and this experience has helped me to understand my clients' presenting issues more holistically, especially from a neurobiological perspective.
I offer both short and longer term psychotherapy, and I have special interests in trauma, relationships, family systems, family estrangement and neuro-diversity.
I work with individuals, couples and also offer supervision to counsellors in practice.
I particularly enjoy working creatively with clients, using metaphor, imagery, music, film and other arts to facilitate growth and catharsis of emotions.
I attend regular supervision that supports me in my practice and ensures that I work ethically.
Practice description
I work as an Integrative therapist, which incorporates Humanistic, Psychodynamic and Transpersonal strands, but ultimately I focus on the therapeutic relationship.
I will support and guide you on what can be a challenging journey. Therapy can help you see your life situation both past and present more clearly, and allow you to decide what changes you want to make. Therapy offers a safe, confidential, non judgemental space to let out difficult feelings and this in itself can allow clarity, movement and deeper understanding.
Sessions last one hour online, and we would ideally meet weekly initially to help build our therapeutic relationship.
However, this is flexible to suit your practical and financial needs. The duration of therapy can vary from week to months and often years. I am guided by what you present with, and what you are willing to explore. I will let you know how best I can support you at each stage of the work.
I will not sit silently, and be a 'blank screen'; at times I may gently challenge you if I feel this would be of benefit to you.
I often work with an unconscious process known as 'transference/counter transference' which is concerned with what I am feeling with you in the sessions and I may share this with you, if I feel it could be helpful.
Reflecting on and exploring this can provide clients with a better understanding of themselves, their life experiences and their relationship dynamics, and ultimately the impact it may be having on their lives.
My first session
If you like the sound of my approach, the next step is to arrange a 15 minute free-of-charge informal discussion, either on the telephone or online. This will give us both an opportunity to see how comfortable we will be in working together, and allows you to ask any questions about the process of therapy before making a decision.
If you are happy to proceed, then the first full session is an assessment session. This allows me to gather information that will help me decide on how I can best support you, and where the therapy may need to focus.
I give new clients a contract and I will discuss this with you in your first full session. This sets out both of our roles/responsibilities within the client/therapist relationship, such as confidentiality and the boundaries around this, specifically in relation to working online, and contains some information about data protection and my cancellation policy.
