About me and my therapy practice
I’m Alex - a person-centred counsellor and registered member of the BACP. I am passionate about the importance of mental wellbeing and greatly value individual life experiences.
I work one-to-one with adults (aged 18+) and can offer either short-term or long-term support over weekly or fortnightly sessions, depending on your therapeutic needs.
I work remotely and can offer either video call (Zoom) or telephone counselling sessions.
I approach counselling with empathy, sincerity and collaboration. These are core values that underpin my practice so that we can work together compassionately, with purpose and without judgement.
I have worked with a broad range of clients and have experience of supporting a variety of challenges. Having also volunteered for a bereavement support organisation for several years, I have in-depth experience of working with clients experiencing bereavement and loss. I also have a special interest in working with clients experiencing emetophobia (fear of vomiting).
Practice description
I am a person-centred counsellor, meaning that I work in alignment with person-centred counselling theory, which originates from the work of Carl Rogers, and is a humanistic approach.
In the person-centred approach, the client, and what they would like to talk about, lead the counselling sessions. My role is to walk alongside, supporting you in finding greater clarity about yourself, your experience and how you would like to move forwards. This is done through creating a safe and confidential space for you to speak openly.
Some come to counselling with a particular challenge that they would like to work through. Others may be uncertain and are looking for a space to talk things through and explore. The most important place to start is to make sure that I am the right counsellor for you. Some of the topics I can support with are:
- Bereavement & Loss
- Change
- Emetophobia / Phobia of Vomiting
- Moving Forwards
- Personal Development
- Relationships with Friends & Family
- Stress
- Understanding Yourself
- Worry
Emetophobia
Emetophobia is a fear of vomiting (being sick). The way emetophobia is experienced varies greatly, but it can impact heavily on your wellbeing. I have a special interest in working with emetophobia in my counselling practice. I have experienced emetophobia for the majority of of my life and I am passionate about supporting others who experience it.
In accordance with my person-centred approach to counselling, I can offer a non-judgemental space to open-up about your emetophobia in a way that feels the most relevant and comfortable for you. This could lead to greater insight into what may have caused your emetophobia and what continues to fuel it. The aim of my approach is to not necessarily seek a ‘cure’ or ‘removal’ of your emetophobia, but instead support you in exploring how your emetophobia may fit with your understanding of who you are and your life experiences. Please note, as my counselling practice is person-centred, I do not use CBT, EMDR or Exposure Therapy.
My first session
Initial Conversation - 15-20 Mins | Free
Following your enquiry about counselling, we will arrange a phone call, lasting approximately 15-20 minutes. We will briefly talk through what prompted your enquiry, what counselling involves and any questions you may have.
Assessment - 1 Hour | Free
After an initial conversation we will then arrange an assessment over a phone or video (Zoom) call, lasting up to 1 hour. This will involve asking more about you and your wellbeing, and what has brought you to counselling. There is no charge for the assessment and no obligation to continue to counselling sessions afterwards. It may be that through the assessment we find out that I'm not the right counsellor for you, in which case I may be able to signpost you to a different avenue of support.
Starting Sessions - 50 Mins | Weekly or Fortnightly | £45
Once the assessment is complete, we can then arrange a day and time for your counselling sessions. The first session will begin with signing a counselling agreement, setting out how we will work together, as well as the limits of confidentiality. The first session of counselling can sometimes feel a little nerve-wracking, but this is very normal. There is no right or wrong, or any pressure to share all straight away. It is important to talk about as much or as little as you would like to, at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
I also offer a reduced fee of £35 for students and individuals in full-time education (a valid student ID will be required to confirm this).
