About me and my therapy practice

Welcome.  Seeking help isn't easy, but acknowledging you need it is a start. You may be dealing with a life event, a loss or difficulties in relationships. You may be struggling with emotions - feeling stuck, depressed or anxious, or that you get in your own way. Whatever is going on for you, if you’re looking here it’s likely you feel you need another person's support and input to gain insight and see you through.

It isn't possible to know from my page whether I'm the right therapist for you, but if we work together we'll take where you are now as our starting point, and gradually build up a picture of how you've become the person you are today by reference to your past. Together we’ll reflect on things that arise and between us we’ll hope to create a space where you can talk with less fear of judgement or feelings of shame.

For me the counsellor / client relationship, and the 'framework' we work within are key to change. The 'framework' is the regularity with which we meet, and it sets the stage for a relationship that deepens through talking and listening and paying particular attention to what may be going on under the surface.  In so doing we can begin to think about things differently and explore new options.

Practice description

My way of working involves uncovering patterns and feelings and acknowledging that what once served us well perhaps now stands in our way. I am psychodynamically trained which means I believe that our unconscious plays a part in our behaviour, and that insight and understanding can help us make change. I'll listen to what you say with warmth and curiosity, and I'll reflect and sometimes challenge. For me, psychotherapy is a process where we hope to move from an emotional autopilot to something more mindful, with a view to making space for positive change in our lives and relationships.

As for my background, I have an MSc in Psychodynamic Counselling & Psychotherapy and a Masters in Clinical Social Work. In the past I have worked on and run a telephone crisis line, worked in community mental health and student counselling and in a variety of voluntary roles.

My first session

After you've made contact, I offer a complimentary telephone conversation.

From there we'll meet for an assessment where we'll talk about what is going on for you and what may be your goals.

Then, assuming we agree, we'll meet weekly at a regular time, for 50 minutes a session.

Most often we'll work together for around a year or more, though we can also agree a shorter term contract if appropriate.

I meet with clients both in person and online.
