About me and my therapy practice

Welcome to Cheryl’s counselling service. I trained as a person-centred counsellor and have over 30 years’ experience supporting adults and young people with their trauma, relationship's and experiences of emotional and mental health to live happier, lives.

I am also compassionate and familiar with suicidal ideation, Schizophrenia, BPD, anxiety and mood difficulties and people who have been detained under the mental health act.

I feel passionate about providing a therapeutic space where you can be heard and not judged for how you think, feel and cope.

Therapy may feel needed but impossible right now. You may feel overwhelmed, hopeless, helpless, angry, scared or confused and I understand that entering a therapeutic relationship with all these emotions is possibly the last thing you feel you can manage. However, when you are ready, I am here for you and welcome all these emotions as I too have had them.

Life throws us challenges and curve balls that we don’t always want to deal with on our own, so if you’re reading this and would like to discuss what you need, contact me for a free15-minute telephone or video session. This will help us know if I am right for you :-)

Practice description

It feels natural for me to welcome you into a relaxed, confidential space that also recognises that alongside emotional distress, pain and confusion, humour can also feature. I believe that you are the expert of you and see myself as working collaboratively alongside you as you make sense of your experiences, emotions and thoughts.

Alongside talking therapy, I have also trained in creative counselling interventions as sometimes, words are not enough. This means we can also explore your world in many other ways too, using things such as art, writing, sand, cards, objects, clay, photos etc.  These interventions are always on offer as part of your therapy however, you are not obliged to take this offer up, it is important that you are in control of your sessions, the direction and pace.

I offer long or short-term sessions as well as ad-hoc as some people only want one or a few sessions. In certain circumstances, I can come to you if safe to do so and confidentiality can be ensured. I offer, face to face, online, WhatsApp and telephone or a blend of all to accommodate changing needs.

My first session

If after our free 15-minute discussion, you have decided to begin counselling with me, I will have emailed or posted to you a ‘way of working contract’. This will ask you for some details about yourself and include how I work with safeguarding, data protection, confidentiality and payment details.

At our first session, it is important that we discuss this contract and your expectations of therapy. The rest of the session and future sessions are led by you to discuss what has brought you to therapy.

Sometimes, people don’t know where to start, but be rest assured, this is natural, and we will begin with whatever is comfortable or known to you. It takes time to build a therapeutic relationship and a sense of safety and trust.
