About me and my therapy practice

Hi I’m Imy. I’m a degree qualified and BACP registered counsellor/ therapist and I’m also just a person going through life which I hope comes across in the way I work.

I know it can be daunting when looking for a therapist, all the pages might look similar and you may not be aware of the different types of therapy or some of the words used to describe the way people work. I will do my best to describe the way I work and further questions are welcome during a free initial consultation.

All sessions offered at present are online (I may offer face to face in future.)

Practice description

I offer an open, grounded and non-judgemental space to you for an hour a week where you can reflect on how things are for you in your life and move towards understanding your feelings, thoughts and experiences with me alongside you.

You can speak openly about how things are for you without fear of judgement and this kind of environment can allow for new insights and ideas about where you are and potentially ways you might like to move forward.

It’s also a space where it is ok to pause, rest and reset without pressure. It can be a space to come back to yourself and rediscover what is right for you if you often find yourself just thinking of others and external expectations of who or how you should be. Our sessions are spaces for you to bring whatever you wish and to show up as your full self.

It can be hard to talk to people in our daily lives about how we truly feel and we often feel guilty for taking time to speak about ourselves and our worries with others, however, this is exactly what the counselling space is for.

I believe you are the expert in your own life, only you know how things really are for you, so I won’t tell you what to do or how to feel. I will be a companion to help explore options and viewpoints.

As a primarily person-centred practitioner, I see my counselling role as providing the right conditions within our sessions and between us so that you can grow and change or rest, reflect and recoup in the way and at the pace that is right for you and, in times where you are unsure, we can work to discover this together.

We will all experience difficulties in our lives which can affect our well-being related to our individual contexts and feeling this does not mean we are wrong or need fixing but it does mean that we deserve time and space to acknowledge this and process through these. I hope I can offer that space to you in a way which feels empathic, compassionate and empowering.

My first session

Taking the first steps to explore if counselling might be right for you can feel intimidating, so if you made it this far I hope you can give yourself credit. I’m so glad you have felt able to show up for yourself in this way regardless of whether you choose to enquire with me or not.

Research studies suggest that finding a counsellor that you click with is vital to the success of counselling (whatever success looks like for you). Some studies have shown this to be even more important than the ‘type’ of counselling. For this reason, I offer a free initial consultation/chat. This is an opportunity to share what has brought you to counselling and discuss if this is the right time to begin working together.

I will also explain my therapeutic approach and how I work to see if this is in line with what you are looking for without pressure. At the end of this we can both decide if we think we might be a good fit and go forward from there.
