About me and my therapy practice
Hi, I am Laura, a Counsellor and Psychotherapist who can help you with a wide variety of issues but I specialise in anxiety, depression, stress and low self esteem.
Life can be really challenging at times, and it can leave us feeling really overwhelmed. All of a sudden, we find ourselves unable to cope with day-to-day things. The world can seem like a scary place when our anxiety gets too much, and we get frustrated with ourselves as we struggle to take back control. We can get depressed when we lose someone or life is not how we had hoped it would be or we find ourselves getting depressed after giving birth to our newborn. Life happens and we lose ourselves in the roles and paths we take. The experiences we've had in our life can really affect our self esteem and we convince ourselves that we deserve to be treat badly, that we are useless, we wonder what is wrong with us or we fear being rejected so struggle to put those boundaries in place.
Having experienced anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, stress, family difficulties and grief myself, I know and understand how overwhelming these things can feel. I know how they can affect your life. I also know and understand how daunting it can feel seeking support through counselling. You may have many questions right now; you may not be sure if counselling is for you or if you did have counselling, what you would say or how does it work. I still remember the anxiety I felt when I first reached out and asked for support which is why I will greet you with warmth and friendliness.
Practice description
Within counselling there are many modalities. You may have heard of some of them such as Person Centred/Humanistic or CBT. Some counsellors practice in one modality or style of counselling. However, that can have its limitations. I am trained in Pluralistic therapy. If you have not heard of this before, Pluralistic counsellors like myself are trained in a variety of modalities. I am trained in Psychodynamic, Humanistic and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. The benefit of being a Pluralistic counsellor is that I have more “tools” in my toolbox to help you work through whatever you need at the beginning of your journey and I can respond to your changing needs as therapy progresses. One size does not fit all and I can provide you with an approach that is as unique as you are.
My first session
Asking for help takes courage and strength, especially when you are riddled with anxiety or you are struggling to find the motivation to get out of bed some days.
Whatever your reason is for seeking support, as a friendly and approachable person, I aim to provide you with a non-judgemental, empathetic and supportive space to fully explore your situation and to help you understand your thoughts and feelings so that together we can work through any difficulties you are experiencing and find a way forward so that you can come out the other side and live life to the full.
I can help you find the coping skills for your anxiety that will work for you and help you take back control of your life, to have the life you want. I can provide you with the support you need when you are experiencing depression. I can help you find your “true” self and I can help you work towards loving and accepting who you truly are.
During your first session, we will go through a therapy contract so we both know what to expect from each other during our time working together. I will explain how confidential works in therapy and how I store your personal information. I will listen to you so I can understand what has brought you into therapy and to together we will figure out the best way forward for you.
