About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I'm Caitlin - I am a therapist working with individuals, couples and intimate partners.
Individually or as part of a couple we may experience times in our life where we might struggle or find things difficult. I support people seeking therapy for many reasons – difficulties in relationships (romantic, familial, friendships), anxiety, depression, recovering from trauma, loss and bereavement.
Whether your difficulties stem from what's happening now, or from past experiences, I hope we can work together to help you understand yourself better. This could be through exploring patterns of behaviour, responses to emotional situations or ways of being in relationships.
How counselling can help:
Working together, I hope that my clients will leave therapy:
- Feeling much more connected to themselves and their feelings, and able to rebuild their emotional strength
- Feeling able to improve their relationships and interactions with others
- Understanding themselves and the way they behave better
- Using awareness and insight into themselves to cope better with situations and emotional demands
- Feeling more positive and confident, feeling more able to make the changes in their lives and relationships that they might desire and to find ways to live richer, fuller lives
How I work:
I work relationally, firmly rooted the belief that we all possess the capacity for growth, and that insight and self-awareness are the starting points for positive change. I work integratively, using a range of therapeutic models so I can tailor my approach to the unique needs of each client.
I tend to draw from psychodynamic schools of thought, which look at how our early life experiences might be impacting our current ways of being and interacting with others. With a Humanistic Person-Centred approach as my foundation, I also explore via attachment therapy, CBT, Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, Compassion Focused and Couples work.
Practice description
I am registered with the BACP, holding an Advanced Diploma in Humanistic Integrative Therapy (BACP accredited course), and a Practitioner’s Certificate in Intimate Partner Therapy (COSRT accredited course).
Therapy can sometimes be challenging; reconnecting with feelings, experiences or memories we may have been avoiding, or not thought about for a while can be difficult and upsetting. But it can be very rewarding, allowing you to understand yourself better, and begin to live a richer, fuller life and deeper connections with others.
Working with individuals and couples, with a focus on compassion, acceptance and understanding, I aim to offer a safe and caring space where people’s unique lived experiences are respected. Working at your pace, helping you to reconnect with yourself, your true feelings and aspects of yourself that you perhaps might find hard to accept or understand.
For individuals:
Individual therapy provides a space for personal growth and transformation. It helps you explore how your past influences your present and equips you with new strategies to move forward. The goal is to support you in overcoming challenges and building the life and relationships you desire.
For couples and intimate partners:
Relationship therapy can help you recognise and change unhelpful dynamics. I support couples to explore the complexities of their relationships and of each other. The work often focuses on improving communication, developing understanding, infidelity, issues with intimacy, resolving conflict and building trust. The aim is to strengthen relationships and connection by addressing issues from all sides, to provide tools to support more productive interactions.
Often people may seek therapy when their relationship feels at a crisis point, or they are stuck, or there is a particular issue that they would like to address; or maybe some people may want to just find a space to nurture and attend to their relationship with some neutral support.
My first session
The quality of the relationship between the therapist and the person they are working with is often the key to the work being successful, so choosing the right therapist is really important.
To help explore if I might be the right therapist for you, I offer all potential clients a free 20 minute consultation (on Zoom or phone) where we can start to get to know each other and see how we feel about working together. This is also a chance for you to begin to share what might be bringing you to therapy.
If, after that session, you feel that you would like to work with me, we will arrange a regular time to meet once a week. In the first session we can talk more about how we might work together, and what you hope to get out of the process.
