About me and my therapy practice
My name is Tom (he/him), and I am an integrative therapist, trained at the Minster Centre.
Therapy with me is about being listened to, in an open, safe and nurturing environment. My hope is that therapy allows you to know yourself better, to feel seen and heard in the fullness of what it means to be you. Together, we can try to deepen our understanding of that experience, and process that which might need attention. We can then use that deeper understanding to think about your life, and the choices your make about how you want to live it.
The process is different for every person, and I am here to facilitate your particular journey. This can involve working at the edge of what feels comfortable. My role in the sessions is to respond to your specific needs, however they present themselves.
How I work:
I work relationally. I believe that the relationship between therapist and client is the vehicle for positive and lasting change. I focus on that relationship’s capacity for insight and healing.
I believe that you are the expert in your own life, your own difficulties and what path to take in order to improve. My role is to facilitate you in seeking and achieving your own personal growth, in the way that feels best for you.
I think about how your past might be showing up in your present¸ and what that might mean for your life in the here and now. I draw from psychodynamic traditions for this, and in particular Attachment Theory. Attachment Theory is based on observing how we are in relationship to others, how we were in relationships in our past, and so how we can be more fulfilled in our current and future relationships once we notice our own tendencies.
I am committed to non-discriminatory practice and welcome clients of all identities, cultures, faiths, genders and sexualities, as well as those with health conditions and disabilities. I pay close attention to how one's identities interact with power and society, both in the wider world, and in the room with me.
Practice description
I see clients in Crystal Palace and online at present. Sessions are 50 minutes, weekly, and cost £70. I have a small number of concessionary sessions. These are currently full, but if one becomes available, I will update here.
If we decide to work together, I can offer two ways of working:
- Time-limited blocks of 6-12 sessions. These will usually with more of a focus on a particular issue that you wish to address, agreed with at the outset.
- Open ended, long term work
Finding the right therapist can take time, and I encourage you to speak to multiple therapists in order to find the best fit for you and your needs.
As a first step, I offer a free, 15 minute phone call to anyone interested in therapy. During this, we can cover:
- What therapy with me looks like
- What your goals or expectation you might have for therapy
- How working together might help you achieve those goals
My first session
Our initial consultation will be a chance for me to really find out about who you are in greater depth, and for you to get to know how I work a bit better. The session will be a little different from a normal session. It will be slightly structured, with some set questions that I will ask. This is so that:
- I can get the fullest sense of you and your story as it is right now in a single session.
- I can responsibly assess any risk factors that might affect the work.
- We can clearly establish how we would work together, if you decide to continue.
This will take 50 minutes and is charged at £70. There is no expectation of further commitment, unless you decide to.
