About me and my therapy practice
My name is Catherine Bain. I am a qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT). My training is rooted in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which is evidenced based as being an effective therapy for treating many mental health disorders, such as; anxiety, depression, phobias, addiction and many other mental health issues. I use an integrative approach and tailor sessions to suit the needs of the client, and this involves using other therapeutic approaches to find the best way to address clients issues.
I work with individual clients aged 16+. I offer in-person or online therapy sessions. I offer a warm welcome, supportive counselling environment, and space to explore your thoughts, feelings. emotions and behaviours. I offer short-term, medium-term, long-term, goal orientated therapy.
I have a real passion and enthusiasm for counselling. I have a wealth of knowledge and experience through working with people presenting with a wide range of mental health issues.
I believe that therapy is a collaborative process, where we can work together to improve mental health well-being and improve daily living skills to enable us to lead a more fulfilling life.
Practice description
I am based in Livingston and work in the Centre of Edinburgh. I work in partnership with First Psychology. I offer one-to-one in person, or online sessions, these are 50 minute sessions. Usually at the start of therapy we aim to meet on a weekly basis. My approach is collaborative, creative and compassionate. I use an integrative counselling approach, tailored to suit the client. This includes: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which is a talking therapy where I will support you to recognise how your thoughts can impact on how you feel and behave. I also use other modalities in therapy, because I believe that 'one size doesn't fit all'.
In therapy we work together to identify triggers and unhelpful coping strategies and develop new coping mechanisms. I provide a safe place for you to explore what is bothering you.
My first session
The initial session is an assessment session. In this session we explore what you want from therapy? How we might achieve this? The assessment session is for us to decide if we can work together. It is important that you feel that you can work with me, and I with you in order to achieve your goals, and if Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the appropriate therapy for you. During this session I will have an assessment form to complete with you and talk about your hopes or expectations of therapy. If we agree to work together we will sign and agree a working agreement form and decide on a way forward by formulating a mutually agreed treatment plan, which will be reviewed and amended regularly during therapy
