About me and my therapy practice
The motivation to seek psychotherapy will be unique to each of us. We might find ourselves in sudden crisis when our world changes faster than we can cope. Perhaps a more subtle sense of unease has become difficult to live with. We might wish to get to know ourselves better and feel known by someone else.
Our reason for being in therapy can also evolve once we start to unpack things.
Truly being ourselves is a rare freedom for many of us. We might never have experienced it at all. In seeking therapy, I believe we seek a space where we have permission to do this; to bring all of ourselves, unfiltered, unjudged. I commit to making this a possibility for everyone I work with.
Irrespective of modalities, psychotherapy is an ethical practice with confidentiality and trust at its core. Opening ourselves up to certain aspects of our lives can at times feel emotional and confronting. But in a trusting therapeutic relationship, this can be an enriching rather than overwhelming experience.
With this in mind, I recognise that finding a therapist who feels right for you is important. So, I am happy to offer a free first session (via Zoom) to anyone who feels their life could be helped by psychotherapy.
Qualifications and memberships include:
- Postgraduate Diploma in Psychotherapy & Counselling - Regent's University London
- Higher Education Certificate in Psychotherapy & Counselling - Regent’s University London
- British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) registration
- UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) membership
- Society for Existential Analysis (SEA) membership
Practice description
Psychotherapy offers a deep therapeutic exploration of your experience. Unlike counselling, which tends to be short-term and issue-focused, psychotherapy is long-term and can be open-ended. This affords time for your experience to emerge at a realistic pace and for long lasting change to occur.
Sessions are 50 minutes long, at the same time each week.
I practice an integration of existential-phenomenology and psychodynamic psychotherapy. Both of these are vast approaches in themselves, so I will say a little about how they converge in my practice.
‘Existential therapy’ is a therapy that is grounded in existential philosophy. As you might expect from its name, it deals with existential concerns; life, death, who we are, and how we find ourselves ‘here’ at all. Existential therapy understands human existence to be fraught with challenges and therefore doesn’t seek to medicalise or pathologise.
The ‘phenomenology’ part is a therapeutic practice that attends to experience directly. It studies how we are, in our lives, our relationships, and in the therapy room. By familiarising ourselves with our immediate experience, we get to know ourselves.
Within the psychodynamic therapies, I draw particularly from attachment and relational therapy literature. Put simply, these understand that our primary relationships and early years are formative. We learn ways of relating to the world, and to others, that we repeat, often outside our awareness.
Integrating these approaches can shine a light on how we are being and reveal who we are in the context of our unique history. By gaining clarity, we can find ourselves feeling different and new possibilities can start to emerge.
