About me and my therapy practice

I help my clients discover who they are and why they respond the way they do. Talking about your experiences and exploring how your past influences the present can help you understand yourself and why you might experience anxiety or depression. Understanding your patterns of behaviour or thinking is the first step towards changing them. This is not about managing symptoms but addressing the underlying causes - you don't want to just feel better, but stay better!

It is not always easy to discuss personal things with friends or family. Counselling provides the opportunity to talk about your problems with a compassionate, non-judgemental listener, lifting some of the burden off your shoulders. I offer intergrative therapy, meaning I tailor various types of therapy to suit your situation. For example, with low self-esteem, I might use CBT techniques to help you manage your thoughts, before using psychodynamic theory to explore how your self-esteem was impacted in the past.

Client testimonial (used with permission); "Fiona’s kindness, perceptiveness and curiosity helped me get to the bottom of why I was finding life so difficult. Providing a safe space for me to be honest with myself was one thing, but her way of asking questions about my world views and assumptions was infectious and I feel like the therapy always continued long after the session had ended, and even now after our final session." Practice description

Each session would involve discussion about any topics you choose. I would ask questions to help you explore these topics and draw out applications for day-to-day life. Sometimes I use creative techniques like drawing or using photo therapy cards. I might suggest something to reflect on or try out before the next session. In my experience, working together like this to explore your life can be transformative.

I have worked with clients who have bipolar disorder, autism, ADHD, as well as 'third culture' children, and those who have experienced domestic abuse, and sexual abuse. There is no typical treatment as you are an individual, but we would start with what has brought you to counselling, why now, and what changes do you want to see.

I take my clients' privacy very seriously. When I recieve an enquiry, I reply with a copy of my privacy policy which includes how I store and process your data, such as your name and email address. I am registered with the Information Commissioner's Office and comply with their rules.

I'm a Christian, so when working with a Christian client, we have the option to include your faith in our sessions. This might look like asking how you feel God sees the situation or which Bible verses resonate with you. Where your concerns may be faith-related, I contribute my understanding and experience of church dynamics, misuse of Scripture etc.

Have a different belief system? That's fine! I work with people from different faith backgrounds and none, and my starting point is the same for every client; valuing you as a unique person and prioritising your values and worldview. This is your time.

My first session

Our first session takes the form of a free 20-30 minute telephone call. We would discuss what has brought you to counselling, you can ask any questions you may have, and you can get a sense of whether you would like to work with me. At the end of the call, you can tell me your decision, or you can take some time to think about it. I offer this time for free as I think it is really important that you find a therapist you connect with.

Our first paid therapy session would begin with my asking where you wanted to start! Sometimes clients find it hard to know what to talk about, so I would ask some questions as we begin the process.
