About me and my therapy practice

Hey there, I'm Luke, the founder of MyMeaning Therapy. An integrated therapist who blends many different approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-focused brief therapy, and humanistic approaches such as Person-centred therapy, Attachment disorder, Emotionally focused couple therapy (EFT), and Gestalt therapy.

Let me give you a glimpse into my background

Over the past years as a therapist, I've worn many hats. I lived in South Korea, teaching children and supporting expats dealing with; loneliness, depression and anxiety. In Romania, I worked in an orphanage, offering support to both children and adults who faced trauma and rejection. I've also volunteered with numerous charities, providing counselling to carers and key workers post-COVID. At Childline, I counselled many children grappling with challenging experiences like ADHD, low self-esteem, and navigating family issues during the pandemic. Alongside all this, I juggled hospitality work to make ends meet while studying, observing firsthand that everyone shares a fundamental need to feel seen and valued.

In the midst of it all, I've faced significant personal bereavement, including the passing of my mum caused by cancer and enduring breakups that left me feeling lonely and unwanted. So, try me … I’ve done a little of living and I’m sure there is more to come.

Practice description

So, what's the big takeaway?

I've realized that as humans, we're complex beings who need holistic support. I don't believe in a passive approach to therapy. Instead, I'm here to engage in genuine conversations about what it means to be human and understand our emotions. In our sessions, I create a safe haven where emotions, thoughts, and feelings are given space to be heard without judgment. It's in these moments of vulnerability that true transformation happens, as we navigate the darkest corners of our psyche and confront the parts of ourselves, we've long rejected. With empathy and consistent support, we dare to embrace change and recognize our inherent worth.

How does it all work?

It's not just about what we talk about; it's about how we talk about it. As Albert Einstein said, "We can't solve our problems with the same thinking that created them." To truly understand our experiences, we must tune into our feelings and emotions, much like the characters in Pixar's "Inside Out," listening closely to what they're trying to tell us—often screaming, "LISTEN TO ME!"

I understand that opening up to a stranger, even one on the internet, can feel daunting. But it's a responsibility I take seriously, and I'm grateful for the privilege to walk alongside you in your journey. Your safety and feeling seen are my top priorities, which is why I tailor our conversations to meet your individual needs.

Thanks for taking the time to read about me, and I wish you all the best on your therapeutic journey. Remember, I'm here whenever you're ready to take the next step.

My first session

In the initial 30-minute session, my primary goal is to establish a foundation of trust and understanding between myself and the client. I begin by creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere, emphasizing the confidential nature of our interaction. I introduce myself, providing a brief overview of my background and counselling philosophy.

I encourage the client to share their reasons for seeking counselling, allowing them to express their concerns, goals, and any expectations they may have. I also inquire about their personal history, including relevant aspects of their life, relationships, and experiences. This helps me gain a preliminary understanding of the client's background and the context of their current challenges.

By the end of the session, I aim for the client to feel more comfortable, understood, and informed about the counselling process. I may provide a brief overview of what future sessions might entail and discuss any immediate steps or strategies that could be beneficial. Ultimately, this initial session sets the stage for a collaborative and supportive therapeutic relationship.
