About me and my therapy practice
Hello and welcome, I'm Charlie.
I'm a qualified Counsellor and Psychotherapist based in South Manchester. Working in the NHS and the charity sector over the years, I bring to my role experience of supporting adults from diverse backgrounds experiencing a range of difficulties, all with their own unique story to tell. I have a keen interest in working with issues relating to self-esteem and shame.
I welcome people experiencing a spectrum of difficulties and have a special interest in working with people who feel not good enough in some or all aspects of life. If this feels familiar, you might find yourself overthinking, constantly comparing yourself to others and trying to please them (people-pleasing), or you might hold high expectations for yourself that are impossible to achieve (perfectionism), as well as experiencing anxiety and distressing feelings that keep you feeling stuck.
These beliefs and behaviours can cause difficulties in your relationship with others. Most importantly though, these difficulties can lead to a relationship with yourself that is strained or detached, and that can impact how you relate to others. It can feel impossible to break the cycle or know how to move forward, or even imagine what moving forward might look like.
A bit about me:
I have a Masters in Counselling & Psychotherapy from Keele University and work within an NHS Psychological Therapies Team, as well as having my own private practice.
I have worked in adult mental health for over ten years now, having previously worked as a Mental Health Social Worker within an NHS Community Mental Health Team, before making the decision to retrain as a Counsellor, which is a decision I have never regretted. Prior to working within the NHS in my current counselling role, I also worked in a Women's Centre as a Counsellor both as a trainee and after qualification, which gave me valuable experience supporting women who have experienced domestic abuse, trauma and relationship difficulties.

My approach is person-centred at the core, but my work with every person will adapt to suit the individual as we get to know each other and what works for you.
I work from a strong belief that a trusting therapeutic relationship is the key ingredient through which meaningful change can be made. To encourage this, I aim to provide a safe, nurturing and relaxed space so that you feel comfortable to share anything that you need to without feeling judged. It is important that you feel able to share your story in your own time, so I won't push you to talk about something before you feel ready. Instead, I will work with you at your own pace to explore and reflect on your feelings, beliefs, responses and actions in order to work through them and start to heal.
How can Counselling help?
Person-centred therapy is a gentle and undemanding way of exploring why you feel the way you feel to facilitate understanding, self-awareness and, ultimately, discover your own abilities and move forward. It can help you to recognise your worth by developing self-compassion and learning to accept all of your parts (the bits that you like and importantly, the bits that you might not) and recognising that you don't have to be perfect.
Your difficulties might have developed for a multitude of reasons from childhood experiences or trauma to an event or relationship in adulthood. On the other hand, you may have no idea why you feel this way. That's okay, counselling can help to make sense of this too.
My first session
If counselling sounds like something that might help you, I would love to hear from you.
I work online using Microsoft Teams, which is a secure video platform, so you do not have to be local to Manchester to work with me.
There might be a reason why using an online platform is difficult for you in which case I can also offer telephone counselling. I'm happy to discuss your needs and preferences in our first session.
In either case, it is important you have a quiet and private space where you won't be disturbed, but feel free to bring along a cuppa to the session and make yourself comfortable.
Sessions are 50 minutes long and we will discuss your needs at the first appointment, as these will vary from person to person.
How to arrange your first session:
I understand it can be hard to reach out and ask for help, particularly from someone you don't yet know. I offer a free initial 20-minute session, via phone or online, where I’m happy to answer questions, discuss any anxieties, and for you to get a sense of me so you can decide if I am a good fit for you. There's no pressure or expectation to make a decision there and then about whether you wish to continue with me. It's important for you to feel comfortable with whoever you choose.
